Doing bad my Freshman year of engineering

It’s my first year of college here at the University of Michigan’s College of Engineering, and so far it has been rough for me.

I currently am at the edge of a B/C in physics 140, a B in math 115, a B in ENGR 101, and I just got an awful grade on my last physics exam. I get really nervous and stress myself out and then I see the exam grades and my heart just drops and I feel so disappointed with myself. Like I seriously hate myself for being so bad at some of this stuff.

I’m really nervous on how bad that this all will look on my resume. I want nothing more than to get an internship at a reputable and prestigious place, but I don’t know how much of a precedence that job fair interviewers put on one’s GPA. Can someone help me feel better about this, or tell some of their experiences freshman year in engineering and how it turned out? Does it get better? Thanks everybody. I truly appreciate it.

You have a LOT more time after this semester to improve your grades. It’s only your first semester and you’re still getting used to the college workload. Just do the best you can, relax over winter break, and come back in the spring with renewed resolve. It’ll work out.

Take a deep breath. You are not bad, the material is hard. Welcome to engineering. It will get better.

Do us all a favor and report back at the end of the semester.
