Yes, i would like to know where you got that number, because ive searched everywhere for it and couldnt find it. My EC's aren't just decent. Im listening to other people's views, HOWEVER, i cant help but attack the generic CCer response of "you must have a 2300+, a 4.0 GPA, and be like the world champion chess player to get into Cornell." Take in point. NYU! Many CCers attacked some guy with a 1350 saying, ironically just what they say to me, saying NO YOU WONT GET IT, REJECTED. REJECTED!!!!! YOU NEED A 1450+ MINIMUM!!! And he got in with a breeze. I know so many ppl who got into NYU with a 1300 flat. You are full of yourself. I listen but i dont listen to stupidity when I KNOW THEY ARE WRONG. I havent gotten intelligent input yet except for drinkingmilkalldaylong. He is the smartest one on this site. Instead of attacking me and saying something that completely contradicts what any admissions officer and GC told me, tell me something useful.

Come on, we can all admit that CC is a horribly skewed community of SAT freaks.

And my EC's are much better than any Cornell applicant from my school that i know of :)

Oh my God; if you have gotten so much advice from admissions officers and your guidance counselor already, why did you even ask for advice on CC?

And most people know to take everything they read on these boards with a grain of salt, but apparently you cannot handle that. I would suggest you stop coming to this site if you feel you are going to have a mental breakdown because of the responses you get here.

I posted to see from curiosity what typical CCers would say and i was right. Plus, ive been a member since April, and participated in discussions of all sorts from SAT, admissions, to politics. Ive been a very active member as you see in the number of my posts. Im not going to stop coming to this site. And im not having a mental breakdown, jesus christ! Are you high?

At this point there has been quite a bit of heat and I'm not sure you want to hear any other opinions, but let me give you a parent's perspective. Your guidance counselor may well have the best read on your chances but I suggest that ask a few questions to get more info. How many people (better, what percentage) from your school with your class rank and your SAT scores have been accepted to Cornell? On the one hand it is true that your SAT scores are pretty low to be considering elite schools a match, even with good ECs. But you have a very good GPA and class rank, so fall into that group of kids where there is a discrepancy between their scholastic performance (grades) and their predicted performance in college (the SATs). It then becomes hard to predict what a given adcom is going to do. I agree with you that looking at what an individual did at some other HS based on an isolated example is pointless. That's where knowing how kids from your HS do with the same stats is key. Even so, you really do need to keep in mind that even with match schools your chances of acceptance to any given school is at best 50-50, that's why they're called a match; when the odds get to 90% or so you can call it a safety. You definitely have a shot at Cornell and certainly should go for it, but if I were you I'd want to cover by bases in case it doesn't happen. You do have decent shots at the other schools on your list but none of the other schools is a safety except perhaps BU and many are reaches. Are you going to be happy going to Binghamton if that's the only one you get into? All of us parents are familiar with the story of Andison who have very good stats (much higher than your SATs) applied only to elite schools and did not get into any school, so we worry when we see someone without good safeties or enough true matches. I think you will probably get into one of your top choices but it pays to spend the time and energy to find a few more true matches, like at the selectivity of UR and BU, and a safety that you would feel good about going to. When choosing a safety I really would try to get away from the prestige factor or USNews rank because it is much more important to find a school that matches you in size, culture academics, curriculum and location. Please don't take this posting as a negative. You have done extremely well in HS and should be rewarded with a top choice for college but you should protect yourself from a worst case scenario.

Thank you collegedad. Those were very inspiring words. I have actually thought a lot about what happens if i dont get into Cornell. My GC assured me that im almost set for Brandeis as she said "they would love you." UR i also have a very good shot at. I did look at the stats. 13 in total from my school got into Cornell out of around maybe 30 applicants. None of those, NONE, applied to Human Ecology last year. People who were accepted had a large variance in grades and SAT's ranging from 1300 to 1450. Grades ranged from 3.8 to 4.0. EC's ranged from minimal to outstanding. Races ranged from white, black, and asian. So evaluating that of course, and my stats, my GC made a very thorough choice to tell me that Cornell is a very good chance for me. I also think i have a broad range of schools. I wouldnt consider BU, Brandeis, or UR a reach. And no, i honestly would NOT be happy at Bing at all because i work to damn hard in high school to go to a state school, while someone else gets the priviledge of going to a top-notch school. Thats just not right and i refuse to let that happen. Thanks again. Thats what i call, true, mature, resourceful advice (unlike many CC posters).

Brooklyn...do you know who is the head of admission for Human Ecology? I went to visit Cornell in summer and I think his name is Daryl Scott. I liked him alot as he is a very friendly and amiable man.

Yes its Daryl Scott. Hes a young black man. I was referred to him by the admissions director of Engineering when he came to my school. He told me he's really nice too. What do you think i should do to have him remember me? Call him? Email him?
