doing poorly at uc berkeley

Hey guys,
I'm a long time follower of this forum, but have never actually posted on here. I'm currently a UC Berkeley student. I'm a transfer student, so this is my first semester at UCB. I took my first midterms last week and did very poorly on two of them. So bad that I have to get perfect scores here on out to get atleast a C in both courses. One of the conditions of being accepted into Econ is getting a B- average in Stats and an upper division econ course. Due to my scores this is very unlikely. Tomorrow is the last day to drop classes without the semester out rule and I'm considering dropping all of my classes. Maybe dropping out UC Berkeley altogether. My question is if I drop my classes tomorrow and attend in the spring will I be able to apply to the econ major, a capped major, again? Also, how do you guys think getting a W in all my courses this semester will look to future prospective employers and grad schools? Some of you might respond by telling my to talk to an adviser. I plan on doing that first thing tomorrow in the morning. I'm just hoping someone on here has been in the same predicament and can offer me some hope.

I think grades don’t really matter if you get good internships/do extracirricular stuff. But I think maintaining at least a 3.0 GPA is pretty important in terms of finding that first job… after that it’s not that important.

Have you considered applying to a different school or changing majors? Maybe you aren’t doing well in Econ because you don’t actually like the subject? Why do you think you aren’t doing well?

Also, most econ/stats classes are curved. Sometimes a 70/100 is actually an A. So don’t give up too fast.

dont drop out over this.

just switch to an easier major and get that Berkeley degree. that is worth far more to get that first job than dropping out going to a CC and trying to get a job from there.

plus, who knows when (if at all) tuition will ever go down. might as well get your degree before tuition hikes up even more :/

hang in there and keep us posted on what the advisor tells you :)

Well, he’s not going to choose between cc and berkeley. If he went to UC Davis and get a 3.7, it’s going to do a lot more than a 2.7 from berkeley in a random major…

Consult friends, parents, advisors etc, see what they think :)

Have you tried the tutoring resources here on campus, going to office hours, talking to your GSI, study groups, etc?
I think if you decide to drop out just like that without consulting parents/counselors, you might end up really regretting it!
But also, if you decide to switch majors…there are a lot of other useful majors at Cal, it doesn’t have to be some random major (like _____ Studies)

Have you possibly considered Political Economy? If you’re even remotely interested in Politics, it’s a good major that combines that with econ to talk about globalization, industration, etc. I think it has some of the same prerequisites as the Econ major. Sure if you’re looking more into the Business/Marketing side of Econ, then it might not be as relevant, but it would be more relevant than picking a new random major at CAL, and some of the courses overlap between Econ and Pol Econ, so you wouldn’t have to start all over. I would say that’s better than dropping out of Berkeley altogether.
