Are there any current students here that are during UROP and the RC? My main issue was having enough time, since the RC takes a lot of time out of my schedule as well. I also wanted to join a group and have some type of social life. There is also the required 6-10 hours of research time, plus the bi-weekly meetings on Wednesday and I wanted to know if anyone found themselves having a hard time handling it all. Is the UROP program really as demanding as they make it seem? And for any admitted students like myself, what do you guys think? Should I wait until my sophomore year? Thanks. :)

I have a friend from my lab last year who was in RC and UROP (thus working in lab with me) and she seemed to handle everything quite well time wise. The research usually happens during class hours and fun/social things usually happen at night/weekends. UROP doesn’t really interfere with your involvement in things. From seeing how my friend’s year went, it didn’t seem to hinder her social life at all, I frequently ran into her at parties and she had 9 hr/week of research

These programs are part of what makes Michigan special. Most schools don’t have them. In general, I’d suggest taking advantage of the opportunity. Cut back on the socializing and partying and you’ll likely have enough time. If you have work or family responsibilities, it might be a different story.
