Thanks a lot for your time. Please post the link to your thread so that I can chance back!

It is hard to compare GPA from overseas schools as they don’t have your school profile. They will likely evaluate you based on your test scores and recommendations.

@billcsho

I’m quite sure that my school transcript will be a very important part of my application, because my teachers and counselors had always told us to maintain a good grade throughout the years. There are also a significant number of A-level students applying to US universities from Singapore so it is likely that my grades will be compared to other Singaporean applicants.

Your ACTs are impressive and your family background will be a plus. Youre a different canidate and are unique which is always a good thing. Your GPA may be a little low and for Yale and Rice. Im not positive but I believe the Universities of California need a minimum of a C for core classes. (I believe thats correct). If you could?

I don’t think so. Cal State what?

Sorry I meant Cal Poly

Your testscores, both SAT II and ACT, are very impressive. However, the fact that you are an international student will place you in a bad spot during the admission for top schools, such as Ivy.
Ivy = Reach
Texas Austin = Reach
CalTech = High Reach(70% from California)
Rest I do not know them well… sorry!

Good Luck tho!

Hmmm UT Austin was actually one of the schools that I was more confident about getting into. Guess I really had to look at less selective schools.

Bump! More opinions please!

Unfortunately, a GPA below a 3.0 for an international applicant will hurt you when it comes to apps. This holds especially true for state schools like the UCs and CSUs, which are partial to CA residents. However, since that your school is so competitive, and you do have good test scores, it can be possible!

Berkeley: reach
UCSD: reach
UCLA: reach
Pomona: reach
Cal Poly: low reach
Rice: reach
Texas Austin: low reach/match
Harvey Mudd: reach
Yale: high reach

Good luck!

Anyone else?

Bump! I really need more opinions guys.

Hello,
You definitely have extremely solid test scores! Not really sure what the GPA will do for your chances, though. Do you have good reasons for the failing?

For the top UCs, Berkeley, SD, and LA, there are supplemental forms that some people can get. You could get the talent one, because you’re a national judo athlete.
If you do get the talent supplement, these schools should be matches, but again, I’m not sure of your GPA. However, if your school really is that competitive, hopefully they’ll put that into consideration.

Though, as other people have posted, international students are in a bit of a disadvantage, so probably you could expect to pay full costs. UCs, for out of state students, costs as much as private universities.

I don’t know much about Pomona.

Cal Poly SLO is a match or low reach. So is Texas Austin.

Harvey Mudd, Yale, and Rice - as for everyone, these are high reaches.

Good luck!
And here’s my chance thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1524479-updated-chances-strange-asian.html</a></p>

You seem to be in pretty good shape - except your grades and the fact that you’re ethnically chinese. Because of that I don’t think Ivies will be feasible, and even Texas will be a reach. The rest however will be low reach/match.

Chance me? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1525303-chance-me-please-ivies-new-ap-info.html#post16140820</a></p>

Your EC’s are stellar! I wish I had that! I don’t know how they view international students, but I do know it’s pretty competitive for Ivy League schools. I think it’s a good match for UC schools however

Take a look at the smaller [Association of Independent Technological Universities: AITU](http://theaitu.org) schools Some of the less selective ones do offer some financial aid to international students and they could be good safety schools for you.

Hi,
You have amazing test scores and very unique ECs. The fact that you are international and asian however, will put you back significantly. As for your GPA however, I can see that you are a very smart and hardworking student by your tests scores. You might want to mention how competitive and difficult the workload at your school is somewhere in your application. Like the person above suggested, I think you should apply to some less exclusive safety schools just in case.

Berkeley: reach
UCSD: reach
UCLA: reach
Pomona: low reach
Cal Poly: low reach
Rice: reach
Texas Austin: high match
Harvey Mudd: low reach
Yale: high reach

Hey thanks for the input.

I have a place in National University of Singapore so that would be my safety for now :)

More opinions please!

There are plenty of Asian overseas applicants with great standardized test scores but poor performance at school. The admission office is well aware of the exaggerated test preparation in China, for instance. They may think you are just one of those. In addition, there are many cases of cheating in these tests recently (Korean & China) that may also make them have some doubt on applicants like that. So it is very important for them to compare you with other students from your school.

I do have my A-levels though, which I did pretty well in. Is it enough for the admission office to compare me with my peers?
