Donating Blood.. Very interesting.

I can’t wait to donate, I’ve been restraining myself from getting my belly button pierced just so I can donate =)

im reading the guidelines right now. i cant donate blood because i weigh less then 110 pounds! ***ffff.

They don’t weigh you, and they probably should. One of my friends is right around 110, and I guess she was under the day she gave because she fainted in the middle of the hallway.

Yeah, honestly don’t donate if you’re under 110. Anything borderline can be really bad. I just barely made the iron (?) level (they had to check me twice because the first time I was under) and I ended up passing out at work.

WHAT? You can’t donate if you’re under 110?
Are you sure they don’t take enough blood thats relative to your size?
Because if they don’t I’m going to be ****ed.

I know someone borderline that passed out.

im pretty sure they always take a pint. that seriously blows though. every year my school does a blood drive and next year is the only year ill be eligible (just turned 17). and gaining a few pounds by in a few months is actually pretty hard for me.

you don’t want to give blood if you weigh less than 120.

i guess i wont be donating blood anytime soon.

At least you don’t have Mad Cow Disease like I do.

I think the policy is completely ridiculous

Case in Point: I know a girl who has had sex with 24 men this year alone and is completely allowed to give blood. No questions asked

I have a gay male friend who has been with one male ever. They have been together for four years, both are HIV negative…

Why can she give blood but he can’t?

I think the policy needs some common sense

also, Male to Male sex is the EASIEST way to spread HIV, but it is not the most common. The most common belongs to HETEROS

Wouldn’t that simply be because there are more straight people? :/

Yes. Lots of numbers:
[AIDS & HIV statistics for the USA by race and age](Data | Be in the KNOW)

New cases are important, because they are the only ones that can into the tested blood supply.

RocketLouise - I’m sorry to say this, but you are WRONG.

According to lockn’s site…

Estimated adult and adolescent males living with AIDS by race/ethnicity and exposure category, all years to the end of 2007 (50 states and D.C.) :

Just for whites: Male-to-male sexual contact accounts for 106,286 OF 138,937 people with HIV.

In total it comes to 213,500 of 347,284

It is the EASIEST and by FAR the most common. Do some research.

umm…I’ve done some research. The majority of people with HIV in the WORLD (counting Africa and Europe and Asia) are Hetero
I promise

If you don’t trust his site, I found the CDC’s

Since the EPIDEMIC has occured:

487,695 cases are from Male-to-male sexual contact compared to 176,157 cases from Heterosexual contact…

[Basic Statistics | Statistics and Surveillance | Topics | CDC HIV/AIDS](http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/topics/surveillance/basic.htm)

The total number doesn’t matter, cases per person doesn’t even matter, the rate of new cases does. There is a huge number of people that got AIDS back in the 90’s and are currently on treatment and will live for a long time, these people do not matter. As you can see, heterosexual black females now get the disease at a rate three to four times that of white men. If the FDA was serious, and not just concerned about their PR, they would ban that group or allow gay men to donate.

You promise… that’s cute.

Ok anyways - this discussion was made on the U.S. As I’ve stated in other posts. I’m not going to say that the highest RATE of transmission in the world is Male-Male sexual contact but it is by FAR in the U.S. And since that’s where the blood goes if it’s donated… then we’re using U.S. Statistics.

Yes, but if you read the site, that is ONLY in America. rocket is counting the world.

Yes Roman but my point is that we’re discussing the US policy of donating blood, not the world. I’m sure gays have the right somewhere to donate blood.

Now, this statistic baffles me… Worldwide, more than 80 percent of all adult HIV infections have resulted from heterosexual intercourse.

… 80 PERCENT.
The statistics in the US for male-male intercourse… wowza.

Is it me or does it seem like the US hasn’t done anything about it? It’s not right… But most things with homosexuality aren’t. Many classify them as deviants. Unfortunately, the statistics support that claim.
