Say Lax needs some extra cash for a weekend Vegas getaway. How much $$ can I get by donating blood @ the ucla blood/platelet center?

They give you money? I thought it was a donation o O;;

apparently. My friend @ ASU did it and got some good $, I'm wondering if they do the same here. If I didn't have moral qualms about donating sperm I'd probably hit that up, but it just doesn't sit right. Anywho, back to the OP, how much $ for blood/platelets?

300 for plasma, I think.

You serious? That's some serious bank. Can I do it @ the UCLA place?

wow 300? I'd do it too!

I don't know. All I know is that the boyf was considering doing it at the West Hills Med Center where he lives bc he is as poor as a peasant. He said 300. I know nothing. Google something up.

You receive 4 hours of pay if you work for the UC. Plasma & platelets, I don't know.

@ the ucla blood center they don't pay money, but they give you movie passes, food coupons for ackerman/luvalle/north campus, goodies like that.

f that, I need $

Wow, really? I donate a lot of blood up here in San Francisco and never get any money.

it's not the blood people pay for... it's the plasma.

what the difference is idk. all i know is you can't give plasma as often as you can blood.

plasma is the liquid part of the blood. You can donate either every week or every 2 weeks, I don't remember. you can donate blood every 8 weeks.

If you ever feel too lazy to study/have 2 hours to kill, you should go donate plasma at the UCLA blood center. They have a pretty big DVD collection, even w/ new movies, or you can go online/ use the computer while donating. Plus the nurses are so nice and they tuck you in all nice with heated blankets. sooo comfortable. Then afterwards, they give you free diddy riese cookies, and the movie passes/food coupons/etc.

I googled blood banks and found this

» Los Angeles Plasma Centers @ BloodBanker.Com©

apparently only 1 blood center in LA that pays?

How much for a kidney?

$300 for plasma? Nah.

The UCLA Blood and Platelet Center does apheresis donations (separate blood into red blood cells, plasma, and platelets). You can donate all three or just do platelets and plasma. If you do the platelets and plasma, you can do it every week.

It's everything pppeachykeen said, but UCLA DOES pay you if you work (as a work-study student, regular paid student, etc.) in the David Geffen School of Medicine or in the UCLA Hospital. You get 4 hours of "comp time," or 4 hours of your pay rate for donating platelets. Comp time is there because donating platelets takes a long time (1.5 - 2 hours), so most full-time healthcare workers would have to miss some of their regular job in order to donate; hence, comp time.

I do work-study in the SOM, and I just go every week on either Monday or Tuesday (you get entered into a weekly raffle for Whole Foods gift certificates). If I get paid $10 an hour, then I get $40 for donating.

Compensation time is more difficult to take advantage of if you are full time. If you are part time, you can get the full 4 hours just donating blood in a finite time (t<4 hours)

You just record it on your timesheet and attach the documents for verification. This could be done outside the shift, so there is no way to track (would be trivial) the hours spent donating.
