I'm not going to name names, but a recent addition to a popular academic building is named after this family who gave money to Penn after their daughter, now a junior, got deferred ED.

or so the story goes.

^Which is why they should have accepted her.

OP, tell your friend to donate a new dorm.

people from my school donate money like that sometimes when they're either 1) hopelessly idiotic and have been rejected everywhere, and the family donates to get them off the waiting list or 2) to get into Ivies with mediocre grades/ECs. And yes, it works... One kid got into Harvard with a gpa probably in the mid B-range, no sports, no extracurriculars (if you don't count a girlfriend and dressing as if in a Polo ad), and a 1million+ donation.

Buying your way into college is perfectly acceptable because the money is worth it to improve the school for the students and that one spot is not crucial to the school. Schools never let in more then a very small percentage of development admits.

Everyone ought to go to college. If you are that rich you should definitely go instead so you can learn how to interact with people from different social classes as well as learn how to manage your money, develop interests, and donate to worthy causes (including your school).

ideally, its not right. i think we all realize this.

but practically? come ON. most definitely justified.

Prospective students, if you pay me 25k I'll get you into Penn. I promise.

Lol, Venket, you haven't even officially started your years at Penn yet.

I don't see a problem with this. Is it really that horrible if one allegedly subpar kid gets in so that all of the other students can benefit from a new building, or library, etc.?

Hey, these loans are really cramping my style and every day I'm getting **** from my parents for not going to Maryland basically for free.

So prospective students, 25k and I'll pull some strings to get you into Penn.

I can do it for 20k -and I'll throw in extra-long sheets ;)

But I have the alumni connection :D

25k for guaranteed admission*
