Done with Harry Potter, now I need a book.

I'm done with Harry Potter for about a week now, and I totally don't have anything to read, which, for some reason, feels weird. Does anyone have any books to reccommend?

Thanks!

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, one of the best I've read.

nope, no assigned books. I'm taking AP Comp this year, and we have to take 4 op eds from the Week in Review of the NY Times and analyze the rhetoric in little essay-ettes.

I'll definitely look those up. I'd also be interested in other suggestions!

=] Care to read the Battle Cry for Freedom? It's 760 pages long with small fonts! =P

If you haven't read it yet, try Catch-22. If you've never read any Heller before, I think you'll be surprised by his distinctive writing style.

I'm reading The Great Gatsby. It's a fun book.

I read Battle Cry of Freedom--it was amazing I loved it :) If you're not passionate about history you may not like it.
suggestions:
The Shadow of the Wind
The Kite Runner
The Alchemist
Veronika decides to die
1984
Animal Farm
also try the Bartemeius triology, very easy to read, but similar to HP i think.

=] Hehehe I heart History. xD History is the love my life! <3_<3 Hehehe. =[ Had to read it for AP US History. xP

If you're into sci-fi, I'd recommend the Foundation series by Isaac Asimov.

definitely read Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell by Susan Clarke

I haven't finished it yet, but so far "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time" is an interesting book about an autistic boy.
If you like mystery novels, I'd recommend "A Place of Execution" by Val McDermid.

If you like thriller/crime novels, I recommend books by James Patterson and Harlen Coben

I've just finished "curious incident". it's a really great book. i second that!

true to CCer form, i reccommend "The Gatekeepers: Insider look to the admissions process at a premier college". ^^; i'm reading it right now (along with my 2 summer reading books and an audiobook =\ )

Just finished Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld...really great book. Not exactly fantasy or sci/fi like Harry Potter, but it is about a girl at boarding school...

Sittenfeld is actually a teacher at St. Alban's school in Washington, D.C. So I'd bet she knows what she's talking about (even though it's an all boy's school.)

I add my vote to "Curious Incident" being a great book. The Great Gatsby is amazing. A few John Grisham books should be nice if you like courtroom stuff. Runaway Jury in particular is very good.

hmm i'll definitely look at "curious incident," along with many others suggested! Has anyone read The Life of Pi by Yann Martel? My sister was assigned to read it for school, so I'm wondering if it's any good, if I should look at it too.

Try Bill Bryson's "A Short History of Nearly Everything." It's a fascinating book (though my son is mad that it doesn't go into depth, it does cover a LOT of ground). We got it from the library in both book & CD form & are listening to it while we drive & run errands. I'm fascinated by it.

You can also try Rachel Tour's "Admissions Confidential," about her days being a Duke Admissions's Officer. It's similar to "Gatekeepers," but more "folksy," & shows a different take on the picture of selective college admissions.

My kids are re-reading all the Harry Potter books again too, for the nth time. Son is also doing his summer reading, including reading "New Ideas from Dead Economists," & plowed through "Crime & Punishment" for AP English.
