We will be traveling across the country when D starts at Cornell so we are trying to get organized with what to buy there vs what to ship or take on the plane. Am concerned that if 3000 freshman are also planning to buy the same things when they arrive, we may all just be out of luck! I have some questions:

Do you need a fan in the dorm room? I read it can be pretty hot the first 6 weeks and there is no AC in Donlon.

What are the walls made of? Will 3M On Command hooks work to hold things? How do you hang things? Can you use nails, tacks, or anything else like that?

Are there closets or wardrobes? are they normal closet depth (dimensions would be great if anyone has them)

What are "spider lights" which we read were not allowed? Does that mean all floor lamps with multiple lights are not allowed? I also read that extension cords are not allowed. Are there electrical plugs everywhere so you don't need them?

What is needed for lighting in the room? I read there is no overhead lighting.

Does anyone have photos of rooms--double--and any photos of the bathrooms? We are trying to understand how a coed bathroom works--girls and guys shower in the same bathroom at the same time?

what about the window? It looks like there are drapes on the window.

Do most people in that dorm raise the beds for more room?

What things did you really like having in your room. It seems like space will be tight. Any fun things you did to make your room seem more home like, less institutional?

It’s a good idea to have a fan in the room, but contact the roommate to see if she is also getting one (an important to do if your D is living in a double). Having two would be a waste. However, one could survive without it.

No nails will be allowed. Check: <a href=“Residential Life | Student & Campus Life | Cornell University”>Residential Life | Student & Campus Life | Cornell University; (page 9 or 10 for the details). Also, <a href=“Residential Life | Student & Campus Life | Cornell University”>Residential Life | Student & Campus Life | Cornell University; for what they have in the dorm, etc.

There are closets or wardrobes, and they have the normal depth.

The spider lights’ description is exactly like what you said. The floor lamps with multiple lights would be allowed as long as each light bulb is connected separately (i.e., has its own plug). However, some people still have them in their rooms.

There are probably ~6 outlets in the room. And most people get the power strip to get more outlets. The extension cord that they meant look like this: http://lh4.googleusercontent.com/8yUvuRNEOkCHpu9jjhX8Nbh7deK2XWbUytcX3KP4g8pqZhVk6F_w3ejSp4Q8HpOHFhzcYmvTnjiGuQ5uSwr8tJmbqKD1bqpjne5MUHsSeGbsbMUjsB209ObFz5xsWVwSFLaRpsjLOf7AULPO064rCD1M70H1dYS-bWj_KHtrUrhDukBXhVMBSsxkWyEqIp_gdjsr

Having two+ floor lamps would be enough to have enough lighting in the room.

Some people did raise their beds to make more room. I remember it’s pretty high.
Probably others can help you more to answer the rest of the questions.

Posters, a corkboard with pictures, lots of colorful fabrics, all make rooms seem less institutional.

I would suggest going to your local Bed bath and beyond and ask them about their college services. There was one thing I used, forget what it’s called, where you basically use a registry gun to scan all the things you want. They will gather all of those items at the BBB in Ithaca specifically for you, or if they do not have it, they will be shipped to the BBB in Ithaca from your local BBB, and when you get here, you give them your name, and you can review the contents and purchase whatever out of your hold you’d like.

I’ve seen people using the first one. Not the second one though.

the first one is what I would consider a spider lamp.
I’ve had the second kind of lamp in my room for the past two years and no inspections have ever had an issue with it.

I’ve seen the first one with two plugs (one for each lamp). So, I guess it depends on which kind one gets.

My daughter had a lot of clothes, so we did double hang her closet. I wouldn’t worry about stores running out of things. We were able to pick up a lot of things for our daughter in Ithaca. Those stores are good merchants, they know what it means to have 3000 new clients descend on them. Extension cords were very useful.

Does anyone have photos of the dorms in Donlon? Specifically of the furniture that the room comes with? Do all of the rooms in Donlon have closets? I’m on the fourth floor in a double and I’m wondering if it would be a good idea to get closet organizers? However, on the site it said that rooms have closets/wardrobes o_O which makes me curious about whether or not 4th floor Donlon rooms have closets?

Please and thank you =]

Donlon has closets, not wardrobes. Each student (in a double) gets a desk & dresser. Some people loft a bed & put either a frig, dresser or plastic storage bins underneath.

Also, there’s no overhead lighting, so floor lamps are needed. The desks have a lamp.

my daughter moved into Donlon on Sunday for the 3 week summer program. The room itself is large compared to other dorm rooms we have seen on college tours, however there is NOT much storage space. There is a small 3 drawer chest that’s desk height. Each side has a large closet - 6’ wide, split in half with one bar for full length stuff, the other side with 2 bars. Two shelves above, but there was not room enough on the lower to stand up a small bottle of laundry detergent (shampoo bottles in caddy fit OK). The beds have enough room under them to accomodate a trunk, however you would need lifts to put another chest under them. Lighting was poor - each desk had large swing arm desk lamp.

I took pictures (much to her dismay). I don’t know how to post them here, but PM with your email if you would like me to send them.

make sure you dont put anything on the wall above the line (you’ll know what line im talking about when you move in. its a small crack that runs aroudn the line). there will be random fire inspection where they find you if anything is above that line. It was a pain to move my posters down.
