Don't be THAT GUY

Look, I know some of you are proud of your accomplishments, but don't be that person who makes chances Me's for the ivy leagues when you have a 4.0 GPA, 2400 SAT, found the cure for cancer, have double legacy at Harvard and have families who donate over $10,000,000 million to each Ivy League every year for the past decade.

Obviously this is an exaggeration, but you know who you are. Once you get to a certain point, you know that you outshine 99% of students applying, so don't do these chance Me's. Unless you have a genuine concern about maybe a suspension or a really bad essay, just don't be THAT guy.

It will either come across as not true, or bragging.

PREACH

I couldn’t agree more! Massive preach.

Agree. Personally, I think nobody should post a chance me thread for the Ivy league, MIT, Stanford, and the like.

It only makes other people feel insecure, but I will admit that some of the people on here are ridiculously impressive.

IMHO, I don’t see the point of chancing for ivy league schools at all; all ivies should be high reach for anyone, and it doesn’t matter if you’re triple legacy or found the cure for cancer. Since ivy leagues stress holistic admissions, there are so much more variables than what you can fit in a “chance me” thread that determine admissions to these schools. Everyone’s heard of that 2400, 36, Intel Winner who got into the Ivies, but everyone has also heard of another guy with those types of stats get rejected from the Ivies. I think it’s pretty obvious from experience that unlike some other schools with particularly discernible preference for students with buffed stats, the ivy leagues play a whole different ball game.

perfect example: <a href=“Chance super competitive Ivy League Applicant! Will chance back! - Chance Me / Match Me! - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1631319-chance-super-competitive-ivy-league-applicant-will-chance-back-p1.html</a></p>

@LifeAsIKnowIt‌ I totally agree. What is even crazier is that almost 75% of the Chance Me’s on here are for schools that accept less than 20% of their applicants

“It only makes other people feel insecure, but I will admit that some of the people on here are ridiculously impressive.”

Let me fix that.

It only makes other people feel insecure, but I will admit that some of the people on here say they are ridiculously impressive.

@geo1113 Very true! I’m sure a lot of te people on here post projected information as if it is something that they already have. If you think about it, if all these kids are already in the 99th percentile with everything they do, wouldn’t they smart enough to know that these schools have unpredictable admissions?

I think this can become a nice philosophical thread.
I mean, yes, it does make others feel bad, but what about the personal himself/herself? Isn’t he looking for some security? Isn’t he looking for answers? By no means I disagree with you guys, but I want to study International Relations, so debating is my thing :smiley:
What situation is appropriate to post, then? If you’re not an over-achiever, you’ll receive the brutal truth of being a high reach for many, many schools.
I think the truth is that, whether you like it or not, college prep is a brutal process and so is College Confidential, even if many people here try to make it a smoother place. I don’t think it’s really possible to avoid these things on here, yet I do encourage everybody that plans on posting in this subforum to think about the worth of posting something here.

I also HIGHLY disagree with people that think this whole subforum is unnecessary. Maybe if you’re living in 'Murica, in a top school, with a million people assisting you, preparing you since you were born (which is many times the background of the haters). But if you’re part of a completely different culture, the feedback that is offered here is priceless.

“If you think about it, if all these kids are already in the 99th percentile with everything they do, wouldn’t they smart enough to know that these schools have unpredictable admissions?”

Exactly!

@geo1113 Yeah, that’s a strong point, IMO.

No one HAS to read chance threads. Personally I don’t open those that say “Chance Me for Top Schools!” and “Chance Me for HYPS and MIT”. If I open a thread where a clearly highly qualified student is trying to figure out chances for a very top school, I usually don’t post and don’t read again. We all can just choose not to participate. I will sometimes post if I think the student is overreaching completely or has no safeties. But we can just leave those people to “bump” as well.

@intparent Touché

@anniebeats,

I agree with @intparent‌ and let me add that I’m sure we have all posted threads that make others scratch their heads…many can be placed in the TMI category.

Another “that guy” not to be:

“I’m an international applicant needing a full-ride scholarship. I have a 3.1 GPA from the top school in my country and I have a 1720 SAT. Please chance me for Brown, Princeton and Duke.”

@soze That is very true too lol

Been seeing a lot of people like this lately…

Bump
