^
i suggest bootcamp.

lol for now it's trivial stuff, but I'm sure I'll find something bigger to complain about :) I'm pretty much a creature of habit so I wasn't exactly JAZZED to be working with a new OS.

I'll probably install windows XP down the line, though to me it sort of defeats the high price premium for the macbook but will make the notebook more versatile. at ~250 GB I can sacrifice the room.

For one thing, I really took the windows picture/fax viewer for granted - on windows if I wanted to go through an entire collection of images in a folder I could just preview and use the arrow buttons. Not so on the macbook, but I installed JustLooking which seems adequate, but it's not the most convenient.

Also, I'm new to the dock - I installed firefox and dragged it to the dock, assuming it'd stay but everytime I restarted the computer, it wouldn't show up :(

Is there a good all-around media player for the mac? Besides iTunes? Something that can play the wide range of video formats windows could?

also noob question what's the key you use for the "home/end" functions you'd normally see on windows keyboards?

(sorry to threadstarter for hijacking the thread :X)

google flip4mac. using that, u can play windows media files. if your laptop has 10.5.x (leopard), u can preview all your pictures in a folder in Finder. open a finder window, and see the buttons on top of the viewing screen? look at the "eye" button. to the left of that, you will see this "screen" looking button. click that, and u can preview ur pics.

why are we waiting? won't the macbooks be updated after we start school, and then without the ipod deal?

I assume being a new laptop, you have Leopard? Then Quick Look seems to fill that role. On any document or image really, press the space bar. It will give you a preview of it. Use the arrow keys to scroll through.

Strange. Are you certain that it's not just there while open? Otherwise you seem to have run into a bug.

VLC. Enough said.

lol i lied about that dock thing, it works now :) it just seemed weird that once I quit a program it'd go up and poof, but I discovered the "keep in dock" function. :P but thanks for the tip.

I actually find JustLooking to be the closest thing so far to windows preview, while the preview in the finder is good, I like seeing the entire image (and it's a pain for me to maximize the finder window). The only gripe I have is how when I go through an array of images, JustLooking re-arranges them into alphabetical order. I'd really like to see the app preview images in the order of date modified, like on windows. These are really trivial things that I might get over in a few months of use anyway!

Some things that are a really big plus for me in Leopard/Mac in general: you can switch between language input effortlessly, no new software required or fonts, unless I'm missing something. The switch between typing in English and Chinese is as easy as clicking a button, and while in Windows this was the case, you had to install fonts/east asian language options, etc.;

Also the thought of opening some music file and automatically integrating it into iTunes. Call me naive but it's a cool feature.

I still don't get why the "enter" key is used to rename files, but I'll get used to command+o...eventually. not gonna lie, when I first used my macbook I had alot of reservations, I was under the impression that mac was the OS for people who were completely new to computers and had to be babied with everything. While all these things wouldn't have crossed my mind had I kept my xps 1330 I'm still content - learning slowly, but content :)

the free Ipod deal will continue till the end of August right? Will they run out of ipods to give out by then?.. Should I really wait till the end of august when I start college..

ipod deals end early/mid september i think.. umm it's possible they run out... but i think it's unlikely. umm waiting.. that's up to you. I didn't want to wait thats why i got mine already. lol -.- ><

You know, while I hope that the macbooks will be updated before the latter half of August, I cannot not see it logically happening esp. due to the ipod and printer deal. Think about it--many of the college students who just purchased their new macbooks would want to return and rebuy. It also makes sense from a business standpoint to not update the macbooks until the iPod deal ends, ridding Apple of their old stock macbooks and iPod mini/touchs before new models are introduced later this year.

That being said, I will still wait until the first week of August just in case, but my hopes are not high. Either way, we'll still get great laptops =)

The only bad thing is I can't get use to Mac before I start college..

The wait is over.

Investors Hub - Intel (INTC) Message Board - Post #64873

Woohoo, I hope Apple does update the macbooks. Now the question is when will the much-anticipated LED backlighting be released for macbook (regular)?

hmm, I would only take this with a grain of salt
it's nothing official, there's no guarantee that the computer manufacturers will release montevina immediately
the article was written by some yahoo tech guy, not official at all

Intel has formally launched Centrino 2/montevina. Moreover, just type Centrino 2 at Google News and you'll see that Lenovo, HP, Toshiba, and Sony among others have all officially announced new laptops based upon Centrino 2/montevina. Apple will too, the only speculation is when.

The new Sony laptops look amazing. Plus many other companies have already revealed there new lineup and are slated to ship in mid August

In fact I believe the only 2 major companies yet to reveal new Centrino 2 laptops are Apple and Dell...Whats taking so long

And these are the 2 brands im waiting for.. are they doing it on purpose because they're giving out education discounts?

well, I heard that apple isn't doing it cause they don't want to kill the hype of the iphone
the earliest would have to be next tuesday cause they usually do new release on tuesdays
also, rumor is that they're gonna do an whole redesign for the macbooks
if that's the case, they're going to hold a big conference instead of just announcing it on the web like the other laptop companies

Yeah, I would suspect they're still riding the iPhone high and want to milk that as long as possible.

This is from macrumors.com:

"Signs are starting to appear that Apple may be prepping for a revision of their Mac laptops in the near future. Following up a previous Commercial Times report that pointed to a Q3 (July-September) order for MacBook displays, the paper now reports that Apple has increased its order of notebook-use printed circuit boards" by 20% this quarter.

Meanwhile, Apple has notified Best Buy that they would have limited MacBook shipments over the next two weeks. While retail inventories alone aren't typically an accurate predictor of Apple product refreshes, combined with these other reports it may be more suggestive.

Apple has been rumored to be working on new aluminum MacBook Pro designs that will adopt features of the current iMac and MacBook Air. Intel's recent Montevina introduction also provides Apple with suitable processor upgrades to power new laptops. "
