Just a warning...If you get sick, really sick at Tufts, to the point you can't take your exams, be aware that Tufts administration won't help you to negotiate with your professors to take a make up exam. Even after Tufts Health department sends a note to the academic dean, to yor advisor and to your professors stating that you can't take the exams, it won't help you. Tufts administration will treat you like you are a number. I could not be more disappointted and frusrated at Tufts University administration right now. It's very sad. If you want more details, please send me a private message.

All you said is true !!! Had the same experience with my daughter. Also, if you are in a sport, you can run into the same problem. If you miss a class where your grade drops a little bit everytime you miss a class, you are out of luck if you have a sport “meet” that day. Found that out last year. No exceptions !!!

I tried to send you a private message but was not able to because I have not been on CC long enough. You have to have had a minimum of 15 posts before you can send a private message.

My experience has been different.
My son got sick two weeks ago. He emailed his profs to let them know. All were sympathetic. One was prepared to waive the final paper, and I’m sure others would have given extensions.
As for sports-related class absences, that’s a different story. If class participation is part of the grade - as it is, for example, in many language classes - then missing classes hurts you. That doesn’t surprise me and I don’t have a problem with it. The priority is academics, not sports. THis is not Div I varsity.

GoodFIt, I’m really sorry you’ve been ill and have run into these kind of administrative problems.

D1’s experiences have been along the lines of WCAS’s S. Freshman year she came down with something at the start of fall reading period. There was never a real diagnosis, but initially health services thought it was mono. D1 was entirely out of it, so I called her academic dean to find out what she should do. The dean advised her to send emails immediately, and copy the dean on all correspondence with her professors. There were no problems with scheduling makeup exams. Maybe this depends on the professor?

I’m so sorry you went through that too, but that was the opposite of my experience, FWIW. My freshman spring my mom got really sick and my professors were so understanding when I went home 3 days early for spring break - in the middle of midterms no less. Then I missed a full week junior fall for the flu, and received nothing less than support from professors. I had gotten to know them pretty well before these incidents happened, which definitely helped me out.

Well, that sucks! I just want to share a differing story that’s happening RIGHT NOW! I’m a freshman at Tufts, and a bug’s been going around my hall. Invariably, people have gone to health services and have been offered to waive midterms and homework assignments by the doctors, who apparently have authority to do that. Today I’m planning to do the same because I think I’m catching whatever is going around. I’ll let you know how it goes…

Back in college, I remember being sick all night long (stomach flu) and the next morning going to the prof (still sick) trying to get a test extension. He agreed telling me come back and test with his afternoon class. I was grateful for the extra time.
