Does anyone know of selective (however you define it!) schools that don't require essays? For example, we were thrilled to discover that Dartmouth and Washington University of St Louis don't. Are there others? Thanks!

Cal Poly SLO (actually all of the “Cal States” don’t require an essay but probably Cal Poly is the only super “selective” school). The Cal States use an “objective” admission process whereas the UC’s use a “subjective” admission process.

vanderbilt

I think you mean “don’t require an essay in addition to the Common App. essays”.

Yes, momcat2, good catch. I meant don’t require an essay as part of the supplement. Thanks.

Also McGill and I assume all other Canadian schools don’t need any essays at all. Pure numbers (ahh heaven).

Case Western Reserve. They are also free if you file online.

Wesleyan. 10 char

Some/many of these may not be very selective schools, but they can be good as match and safety schools…

Fast and EZ applications http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/802256-list-good-schools-have-fast-ez-apps-no-essays-no-recs.html

BTW, although I realize they are not on the Common Ap, the Cal States (including the two Cal Poly’s) don’t require a teacher’s or counselor’s recommendation either.

I don’t know if you would term Case as a selective school. However, it does require a supplemental essay - I think it requires you to describe something that you are proud of that does not show up on your app or resume.

Wash U (WUSTL)

Pitt used to not require an essay at all, unless you wanted to be considered for scholarships.

Thanks. Another useful category is schools that do require a sup essay but it can be any topic Both Harvarx (not technically required at all, but…) and Yale are in that category. Are there others?

I don’t believe Virginia Tech requires any essay at all, even for admission to their Honors Program.

Middlebury (unless they changed from last year)

^Yes, Middlebury’s supplement continues to be essay-free.

Be mindful that some of those selective schools that don’t have an additional supplement DO have a separate application for scholarships. We discovered this the hard way last year.

My son was awarded wonderful scholarships and/or offered to be in special programs in every college he applied, but he did not submit the scholarship applications to Vanderbilt or WashU. I keep wondering if he could have gotten something at WashU, because that’s where he ended up going. In retrospect, write the supplemental essay! It could mean a $1,000 per sentence.

Not sure if this is still the case, but D ('07) got into Tufts without doing the optional essay.

Boston College doesn’t have one either.

Neither does American.
