I’ve recently started school and although I love my major classes I feel like it isn’t what I want to do with my life necessarily. However, I really don’t have anything else that I can see myself doing or that I’m passionate about and I really don’t know what to do. The school I’m at is really good for my program and I’ve told everyone for years that this is what I want to do, so it feels like giving up to say it isn’t anymore, especially if I don’t have anything else I want to do.
You are not alone. My daughter has also decide that she hates her major. Likes the courses and professors but does not want to work in the field. For various reasons she das decided that it was best to complete the major. However, she has taken extensive courses in her minors that she has a passion for and feel that she wants to pursue in life or grad school.
You might consider talking to your career center for advice and career counseling. Talk to your advisor and see if you have enough time to switch majors. Talk to your professors and discuss what you enjoy about their classes and what other fields that might be similar that you could look into.
No one says you have to work in your major. Many people don’t. However it is important to develop a underlining skill set that can use in the real world. It is likely that your current major is providing that.
Take your GE classes and get them out of the way while you explore other options.
It is OKAY for you to decide to do something else. You do have time. People change their minds, about their career choices, all of the time. You are discovering early that this major may not fit your plans. That is okay.
Don’t put pressure on yourself, to do something you don’t like, just because you think it is expected by others.
