Don't know where to start....

Hello Everyone, let me thank you all in advance if you help me.

I'm coming upon my senior year and I only have a few ideas of where I'd like to apply. My transcript is decent...it's not weak but not strong.

I'l get it listed right now. I'm 17 and African American

Sophmore:
Health/P.E: A
Spanish 2:A
Sports/Entertainment Marketing: A
Chemistry 1 Honors: A
English 10: A
World History/Geog. 2: A
Algebra 2 Honors: A

Junior Year:
Precalc Honors: B+ :-(
US History: A
Spanish 3: A
Advanced Sports/Entertainment Marketing :A
AP Chem(2 block): A
English 11: A

Senior Year:
AP Calc
AP Government
Spanish 4
Weight Training
AP Physics
AP Environmental Science
English 12

ECs:
1 Year football
4 years of soccer
National, science, and math honor societies.
40 ish hours of volunteering

As of right now I've got a 3.88 unweighted GPA since I screwed up freshman year and got a 3.714 :-(. I can definetly pull that up next year.

My Test scores are far below what I'd like them to be(retaking of course):
CR: 590
Math: 660
Writing: 600

SAT II:
Chem-770
Math: 640(retaking)

AP Chem exam I got a 5.

I know that I lack in extra curriculars and I'm honestly probably forgetting alot since I'm pulling this from the top of my head.

Right now I know that I'm going to apply to UVA and Vtech for sure since they are instate. Vtech should be no problem but I'm still somewhat worried about UVA. I'd like to major in engineering so an engineering school is in mind. I've thought about other schools but they all seem like such a reach. Based on your knowledge, what schools which have a decent engineering program are a good match? Again any help is greatly appreciated, and suggestions/criticims are welcomed as well.

You could try University of Wisconsin - Madison. I've heard they have a great engineering program.

But, if you can get your SATs up (esp. critical reading), I'd say you have a pretty good shot anywhere. You have great grades (I don't think schools will mind subpar performance freshman year, especially if you've improved since), and your ECs show clear interests in athletics and math/science.

Thanks for the quick response. My first SAT was a no tutor/study/prep test so that I could get a feeler of where I was. I'm having a tutor and taking a prep course which should raise my scores substantially.

You would probably have a good chance at most of the state schools with engineering. Do you have a geographical preference?
In the south there is NC State, UNC-Charlotte, Clemson, Univ. of South Carolina, Ga. Tech, Auburn, Univ. of Florida just to name a few. There are lots of engineering schools out there.

UVA or Virginia Tech should be perfect for you. In comparison, I don't think other schools would be worth the cost.

Isn't University of Florida a tough school to get into since I'm out of state? I would love to go to school in Florida, and cost is not an issue.

If you want Florida, you could investigate UCF. You could consider Rice as the weather is similar to Florida.

I'm originally from houston so I'm quite familiar with Rice. It's quite a stretch as well. I'm hoping SATs get into the 2100s then I'l have a much better chance at other schools.

"UVA or Virginia Tech should be perfect for you. In comparison, I don't think other schools would be worth the cost."

Agreed. Virginia Tech is such a strong engineering school, it seems silly to pay more money to go anywhere else.

If I were to be accepted into UVA and Vtech, what would be a better choice? UVA is a more prestigous school so I would assume the better internships/job offers could come there or am I completely mistaken?

I've heard that while UVA is more prestigious overall, VTech has better engineering.

Ok thanks for that info. How much of a reach is John Hopkins for me? I've heard that they have a great biomed program.

My son's school counselor told me that Johns Hopkins is looking for people to help diversify the majors - too many premeds. If you enter in engineering you have a better chance.

Thanks ricegal. Oh I forgot to mention that I'm taking physics over the summer and not during school. This was the only way that I would be able to take AP Physics next year.

You might be able to get into UF...just try to bring SAT up by at least 50, but 100 points would be much better. And UCF would be an excellent choice, my dad is an engineer for United Launch Alliance (formerly Boeing) and he said that a lot of the engineers he works with graduated from UCF. So UCF would be a good school for engineering because there are a lot of options around the area- Nasa, ULA, Northrop Grumman, and many other engineering companies.

always, have you visited either UVA or VT? My daughter, also an engineering major, visited both of those schools. She really liked VT and loved UVA. Unfortunately she was not accepted at UVA and was quite disappointed. Every person is different, but I think either of those schools would be a good choice, especially with in state tuition. (We are OOS, but would have spent the money.)

I would have to say it also depends on the type of engineering you want to study. When we took our tour at VT, the guide said her roommate was transferring to UVA because she wanted to study biomedical engineering and VT didn't offer it.

Good luck!

I'm looking into Mechanical, Chemical or Biomedical. I have visited UVA and it was very nice. Haven't been to tech because the week I was going to visit was around April 16th and we all know what happened then. Although I have three different types of engineering in mind, I will probably choose either Mechanical or biomedical. I think I'm correct when I assume that VT is a better m.e school and UVA is a better b.me school.
