Don't let your child leave for college without this

Is the premium monthly or yearly?

Does the homeowner’s rider cover accidental damage like spills?

I sure wouldn’t want a “little” claim on my homeowner’s but several people have said it doesn’t count against it. Is that the general consensus? I have Allstate.

We bought my son’s laptop with Am Express which gives an extra year of coverage, but I don’t know if that covers accidental damage (couble the warranty).

Thanks – what a great and helpful thread.

My Personal Articles Protection policy - through my homeowner’s carrier - covers against spills and any other accidents. Making a claim on it does not affect homeowner’s policy. I have computers and jewelry on the policy.

Each person should talk to their own homeowner’s carrier about these policies and compare them to the other choices. Each carrier is different and offers slightly different products.

Jantnz03 - the premium is yearly.

The college insurance website looks like a great deal. I did call our State Farm agent and they said we could easily add the laptop to the rider we carry for my wedding ring but I forgot to ask if this also included damage.

Do anyone have any experience with locater software (like LoJack?). I wonder if that also works on iPhones. I vaguely remember reading about how campus police are able to locate the stolen computer to a dorm building, but not to the exact room.

Kajon - my personal articles policy is through State Farm and it does cover all damage. Of course, you should check with your agent but I would guess the policies are similar.

Bumping this thread back up again because when I read it last year, I decided to sign up for CSI Insurance. It has just basically paid for itself. My son broke his iPod at school so I had him bring it home at Thanksgiving. I took it to the Apple store; they determined that it was not fixable so offered a replacement ($139) or 10% off the cost of any other iPod. My son wanted a Nano, so I bought that ($149 minus $14.90) and had to turn in the broken iPod to Apple.

I then filed the CSI claim online. They asked for copies of receipts, which was easy as the Apple Store had emailed me the work order for the broken iPod and the receipt for the Nano (love that store). I then got an email with instructions on how to ship the broken iPod to CSI’s partner repair place. Oops. Guess I didn’t read the fine print. I emailed back a note explaining I didn’t have the broken iPod any more. No problem. Just send the original purchase information and proof of my son’s enrollment in college. I dug up an online copy of my Visa bill with the Apple Store purchase in 2007, scanned in the latest tuition bill, and sent all that off. Today I got a response saying the full $149 would be paid, minus our $25 deductible.

Count me amount the satisfied CSI customers.
