I was considering NYU for my safety school, but perhaps I should consider something slightly lower for safety? or am I okay. NYU's become much more selective over the past years.

SAT: 2270 (cr: 800, w: 790, m: 680) haha i suck at math
I'm taking subject tests in oct but most likely to get at least 740+ on all 3
GPA: 3.8 (did average in 9th & 10th grade, then actually started caring and did fantastic junior year)
8 APs by the time I graduate, fours and fives on exams
ECs: lots of clubs and nice internships.
most likely to have a very good essay and good recs

be honest with me :] i was also considering boston college for safety, but I kinda don't like it haha.

It's definitely not a safety school for you. There's been kids who have gotten perfect 2400's on their SAT's and gotten rejected.

To put it in perspective, my SAT was 2140, UW gpa 3.64, I also had 8 AP classes (with 5's on all but one). I had a couple of extracurrics with several leadership positions, 1 varsity sport, and an original, well-written essay. Don't know about recs since I couldn't read them.

My stats are slightly lower than yours, and NYU was a reach for me, and I got GSP'd. For you, NYU is probably a high target/low reach, depending on what school you apply to.

You might want to consider Fordham as a safety - it's a good school, also in NYC.

I just looked up NYU stats and the average SAT score is 2000. So I'm surprised they'd reject someone with a 2400, but maybe he had a horrible GPA?

And thanks, I'll definitely look up Fordham! Any other safety school suggestions for my range would be much appreciated.

okay...just my two cents here about the rankings....when schools get ranked...factors such as gpa/sat comes into account. NYU is made of 7 sub schools...cas, stern, tisch, gsp, gallatin, steindhart, nursing, dental...w/e...when u avg everything (no offense to everyone else but cas and stern) cas/stern gpa gets brought down a wayyyy lot... so...the 34 ranking for nyu is the avg of all the schools...stern is prolly top 10 and cas is def top 15-20...(that's my theory at least lol)...so don't let those ranks deceive u.

i acutally hv the same SATs as u haha only the math is switch with CR (800M 680CR, 790WR)..gpa was top 10% (this year our school, public in NJ, had 38 kids get into NYU [450 graduating class]) and i considered (guidance conselor also advised) NYU a match school. (coach also wanted to recruit me for track but that doesn't count...)

lol well rankings mean very little, though it's the closest way to quantify something like comparing schools.

To be honest even without the other schools "dragging cas down," I think cas would stay around the same lower-30/high 20's. Schools like Tufts, UCLA and U Mich, to me, seem to have a higher caliber of students, though the places are all different in so many ways so it's hard to judge which one is better in everything.

That said, I think threadstarter should get into NYU, as long as she keeps her essays genuine and it reflects her desire to go there. Many people learned that sincerity really is a factor (the hard way via waitlist/rejection). Alot of people are seeing NYU as a better school, so it'll be more competitive I'm sure.

tunit that's not entirely fair, because if you spun off every school in every University, the landscape may not have changed radically. A lot of larger schools also deal with the same effect.

The 2400 kid actually had a decent gpa, but I'm guessing he came off as a snob on his application (because that's the way he is in real life), and didn't make it look like he wanted to go to NYU.

I think you have a good shot at getting in CAS, calendarxgirl, but make sure to have safeties. Maybe Binghamton if you live in NY?

Your stats are clearly really great (good job, woot!), but something to think about is whether or not you actually like NYU. What I mean is, if you don't really like the campus or the general atmosphere, would you be willing to spend $50,000+ on going here if it becomes your last resort?
Make sure you have safeties that aren't all that expensive, so that if you unfortunately do get rejected from your dream school and want to absolutely transfer there after a year at your safety, you won't be paying all that much for the first year.
Good luck =)

Honestly, you could probably put NYU as a safety school. The only people that would probably tell you otherwise either went there or are from NY and see these extreme cases. I knew plenty of people that got in with lower stats than yours. Penn State University Park, though, does sound like another good option as well. Anyway, best of luck.

private schools (medium level) would probably throw money at you. My stats were waaay lower than you and I got $96,000 fromTulane-4years all merit, (then word got around and they overloaded on the merit money...I appplied in September). A kid from my school with similar stats got accepted, is attending Tulane and received NO MERIT $$$$. It was a wacky year for Tulane admissions

the kids with 2400s who get rejected from NYU are rejected because NYU fears that they won't attend if they're admitted. However, for "middle of the road" applicants with scores between 2100-2300, great grades, GPA, ECs, etc NYU can be considered a safety. There are a LOT of applicants with scores below 2000 and mediocre grades, ECs/leadership positions, so the OPs stats will put her ahead of the pack
