just a few questions pertaining to non-academic things:

how is the social scene at amherst? i’m not in party mode 24/7 mind you but i do want to get the whole “college” experience. i know Amherst is one of the top schools in the nation but i don’t think it would be enjoyable for me personally if everyone was cutthroat and competitive all the time. i think life is about balance, and a healthy balance between work and play definitely heightens the college experience.

how are the girls? it’s a fairly small student population, and i know the question is very subjective, but overall, on the basis of solely looks, how do the girls fare? i really don’t mean to be shallow or offensive in any way, but i am curious anywho.

how are the facilities? i have heard that the dorms are quite nice, but what about the rec centers and libraries and dining halls?

1) Parties are annoyingly omnipresent, at least when you live as close my neighbor as I do.

2) Girls are fine, I guess. I honestly don't think which college you go to affects the appearance of the girls there.

3) Recreation is great, you'll have plenty of stuff to do on the rare occasion you get out of your books.

4) The library is great, and they have an ILL system with the other four colleges in the area. Also, the shelves in the basement are alive and will devour you if you turn your back.

I would disagree on #3: There is not much of a recreation aside hanging out with your friends, parties, or pool/ping pong etc, or working out, along with recreational sports like frisbee(but they are intense!). Without a car, it is somewhat difficult to access the mall nearby which has cinema/rollerblading rink/laser tag, and any other things a mall would provide. There are many occasions when I don't really see anything fun to do in my free time, so often i just resort to wasting time on facebook or the jolt.

The thing is, though, if you are to get on top of your work(of course, this depends on the courses that you take), you most likely would not have a lot of free time anyway. I don't understand why anyone would think that recreation in amherst is great. I think it has the worst campus center out of the Smith, Holyoke and Amherst, and there isn't much to do in town other than eating. There really should be a bowling alley.

avant-garde, during my short tour at Amherst I was curious about the same things as you (I'm definitely not shallow, but honestly, appearance might not tell the whole story, but in most cases a part of it) and tried to get some good answers (although I don't believe I did).

The people:
I'm a girl so I was primarily checking out guys (always fun), and to be honest, they were not exactly the hunks I had dreamt about, haha. However there were a few hotties, a couple in the midrange and many (like 75%) that were 'not my type'. The girls, well, I actually didn't see anyone really pretty, but I'm sure there are a couple.
However, I'm Swedish and - this will sound very wrong and I don't mean to offend anyone - apparently we, or Scandinavians over all, have a reputation to look good. I don't konw if I find it true, but what I'm trying to say by that is that I don't have the 'american point of view' and what I (or anyone else) might find hot, is not what you might.

The facilitys:
They are or have renovated almost all dorms, so they where amazing. The library - to dark and really boring, did not like it. Dining hall - very few options compared to the other schools I looked at.. And I don't believe the food is superb either..
