This is gonna sound weird, but I was admitted into the honors program when I was admitted to SAS, but I don't really want to be in it. Personal reasons, and I'd rather do departmental honors, though I know I could do both. Is there a way to opt out of this program, or do I have to do it?

I declined honors program many years ago, too. At the time, I didn’t want to feel added pressure. It’s not weird.

I don’t think it would be required, but I don’t know how you would opt out. So I would call admissions and ask them.

You can go in as an Honors student but not bother with any of the requirements - nobody will inquire as to whether you’re fulfilling them or not.

Really the main advantage of going in as an honors student is preferential housing - which at Rutgers is a big deal. If you really want to live on a particular campus as a freshman the best way to guarantee it is to select honors housing on that campus - otherwise it’s a crapshoot as to where you’ll end up.

If you really don’t have to fulfill any requirements I would probably choose honors for the housing and supposedly better professors.
