Don't Worry, I already know I am not getting in to Harvard.

Ok, So I usually would feel really bad about posting a "What are my chances" post, but since this entire forum is dedicated, I'll suck up my pride and do it.

I am currently a Junior, looking to major in communications, specifically media studies or TV/Film. I am looking into:
BU
U Miami
Syracuse
Ithaca
American
Emerson
NYU
Northeastern

I go to a normal public High school. My GPA is 3.8, 30/209 top 15%
I have taken probably not the toughest courses, but just a step below. Only 1 AP, but a full schedule this year, the rest honors courses. next year 2 ap's and the rest honors. My school doesn't offer many AP's.

My SATs are:
V:730
M:550
W:660
on my first try. I am hoping I will bring it up, but who knows.

As far as EC's, the major one is that I have worked in the TV Studio at my school for 3 years. This may not seem like much but the studio is state of the art, and runs the local cable channel. I am currently a supervisor, directing, shooting and editing my own work. I also am a contractual worker for a local production company, and a TA for tv production and Digital video classes at my HS. I dedicate over 40 hrs/week to this. I am also in
book club-founding member this year, continue in to sr. year
Yearbook-9-12 editor-11-12
Key Club member11-12
Swim Team 10-12
Many of my EC's started late because I had some medical circumstances that kept me out of lots of school during freshman/sophomore year. It took all my time to make-up the work I missed. I plan on writing about this to explain a lacking GPA and EC's.
I volunteer at the food bank every saturday and am a lector at my church.
I am spending my summer interning in the marketing/PR division of a fairly large company, along with teaching gymnastics at the Y and cheerleading in a neighboring district.

So....What do all you experts think? I feel like these are all slightly reach schools for me except maybe Ithaca. Am I wrong? anywhere else I should be looking at?

Muchos Gracias in advance.

hmmmmm ithaca....i get their $hibby mail all the time its annoying :)

You have a good shot at a lot of those schools. I'd raise the writing SAT if I could. NYU is a reach, but I'll bet you'll get into the other ones.

you could easily get into WSU, ever considered it?

You'll have a descent shot at any school if you bring up your math and writing

WSU?
I haven't heard of it. Strong Comm. program?

I am taking an SAT prep class in school which I actually think has helped me alot w/math and the essay. we'll see on june 4!

Thanks!

Any suggestions for other schools I should look into? :)

If you want to go to a good college, but don't want snow... Try Furman, it's in Greenville SC and I've heard their Communications dept. is rather good. Furman is one of the best in the Southeastern US for most majors. Also one of the most expensive, tuition is $28,000 (But I've heard it's well worth it, I'm planning to go there if I can get in lol).

a 3.8 is NOT "lacking".

This forum drowns you so much!!!

Statistically speaking, (against the opinions of many people here), your GPA is ABOVE the average entering freshman GPA for all of those schools.

The toughest school on that list to get into, NYU, has an average freshman entrance GPA of 3.7. Syracuse, UMiami and BU have 3.5-3.6 averages, and the others are around 3.3.

Yeah I know, but I guess I feel like I have a shaky background, with a C and a D as final grades in chem and geometry sophmore year and lots of absentses. Is there anywhere outside of the essay to explain a medical/personal condition that interfered with school for an extended period of time?
