people post they have like a 710 on one section or 2100/2400 and people tell them they have NO chance and low scores? haha. Like..am I living in a different world or something?

Plus - I think it would be truly amazing if everyone's scores on here were honestly reported, but I quite doubt they are. It's easy to tack on a few points online, isn't it? Just saying :)

I don't think people lie about their stats very often (besides the obvious trolls) -- why would they ask for "chances" with inaccurate information?

^ I disagree completely, a 2100 will get you into pretty much any where. I think this site attracts high scoring, long list of EC, president of this and that people. The exact kind of people that colleges get thousands of. I don't think big name universities are the crap shoots people say they are here. Sure, they turn down plenty of fully qualified people, but I think with good scores, grades, and something that really sets you apart you're going to get viewed entirely fairly. Being a president or starting some club just doesn't make someone unique anymore, and this site proves it over and over.

2100 is good, but not great. Definitely not good enough for HYPSM unless you're a URM or have some kind of hook. And even as a URM, it's not that great lol - unless you're American Indian, that is.

Uh, I believe he said "just about anywhere" - with decent grades, a student with a 2100 is qualified for any school outside the top 15 or 20. There are more than 2,000 4 year, degree granting institutions in the United States, and a 2100 could get you into at least 1,975 of them (again, assuming a good HS record). That's almost 99 percent of schools - I think that counts as "just about anywhere".

Anybody who tells you that a 2100 is not a great SAT score is crazy.

With a 2100, a student is qualified for HYPS. That doesn't mean it will get him/her in--but at that point, HYPS see that the student is strong enough in that area.

What does it mean when you day 2100 is strong enough? I think that's a myth. For unhooked candidates at top colleges the median scores hover around 2200. When you consider that 40% of the class has a hook, how is 2100 strong enough for the average candidate?

People on here I think place too much weight on standardized tests. After a certain point an SAT score merely demonstrates your ability to take a test.

A 2100 is definitely good enough to get into HYPMS, given that you are very well-rounded in other aspects of your application.

Again, a 2100 won't get you into top schools alone, but there is no score that will. After 2100/2200+ I think ivies and other top schools get the idea that you can take a test and start looking at other factors to see if you would nicely complement the school's student body.

Guitarman, can you cite your source-that is just misinformation that keeps getting spread on CC. There is not an ivy that does not have a near or 2200 plus median. Given the number of athletes, URMs and legacies which is over 40%, that would leave the unhooked pool to bring up the median.

I don't care what anyone says, a 2100 is a score most kids would kill for and it's good enough for 99.9% of colleges. Ivy League colleges would prefer to see higher scores, but I don't think a 2100 will kill your chances completely. I love how that's considered sub-par on here. At my school most top students are in the 1800-1900 range.

I am biased by the way because I have a 2100 on the dot and I'm proud of my score.

hmom5 I didn't say that higher scores don't help. I'm just saying that 2100 is good enough to get into top schools. Plus legacies usually have pretty good scores and not all URMs and athletes score low either. After reading some of the decision threads for MIT, Stanford, etc. I've seen multiple URMs denied/deferred with solid scores.

None of us knows how the admissions process works at ivies and other top schools, but my best guess is that they do their best to admit a well-rounded and diverse student body. In that process they admit students with outstandingly high scores and students with great, but not amazing scores.

Higher scores help, but people on this site seem to just count someone out completely if they don't have 2250+.
