You know, the kids that treat you like you are a god walking among mere mortals? The ones that dote on you saying, "You know you're going to go to Harvard." Meanwhile, they remain blissfully unaware of the true amount of competition that lies out there for students applying to elite schools. They prance around, content with their 1440 SAT (out of 2400), yet they seem to believe someone with a 2320 on the SATs is just destined to go to any college in the country. I appreciate when people like this are nice, but the ignorance bothers me. And the persistence, because any time I show even a bit of anxiety about the impending college process, they always chime in uniformly, "Shut up, you're getting into every college you apply to." Although I dream that their words are prophetic, I can't help but be cynically aware that they are just ignorant to the college process.

Do you have people like this around you???

Oh, for sure. Kids at my school, in general, are ignorant about college admissions. Now, I don’t advise that they join CC, but honestly. . .? Comments from my fellow sophomores:

“I could probably get into Harvard, it’s just that financial aid would be a problem.” (Mind you, this girl was dead-serious.)

“To get into Harvard, I’m pretty sure you have to be rich or know someone rich.”

¡Ay caramba! The plague of misinformation.

Definitely.

I desperately depend on my guidance councilor to keep in in-check with the reality that is the admissions process.

Yeah, it can be annoying at times. Just imagine if your SAT score had been as high as mine.

It’s very annoying when it goes on, but what bugs me more is when I make a mistake and people make a huge, unnecessary deal about it.

I was in my biology class the other day, after having a long, stressful and tiring morning and a friend asks me which out of a tornado and hurricane, is on land. I told him I was pretty sure it was tornado, but I wasn’t sure, being so exhausted, so I asked a guy who sites behind me, for clarification. He freaked out, “YOU’RE SUCH AN IDIOT? HOW CAN YOU BE SO STUPID? I’M SURROUNDED BY MORONS!” I almost hit him. I had to threaten him to get him to shut the hell up. It was bad enough he was insulting me, but the poor quiet Asian kid who asked me too? How arrogant can you be?

Or the people who make a big deal that I made a mistake, not putting into context, I have other things more important to deal with in my life than school.

I know what you mean… even though it’s complimentary it shows true ignorance to the overall rigor and competition in top college admisssions

ThisCouldBeHeavn, haha I don’t know if you were being sarcastic or what. My school’s average for the SAT is a 1620, so my 2320 looked quite good by comparison. And yeah my guidance counselor is pretty much useless too, because she has a policy of “anyone has a chance anywhere”.

^ My school uses the line, “Failure is not an option”. If it wasn’t for college I’d prove them otherwise.

I found that way too amusing. CC has made me cynical.

And LOL, musicallylatin.

DreamsofIvy, you have no idea how well I can relate. I’ve heard those EXACT words so many times.

That’s never happened to me specifically, but we were having a discussion in English about how we feel pressured by our parents or whatever, and I raised my hand and started talking about how I felt pressured because my mother went to Cornell, because my father was an engineer and I was sucking at math. The whole class shouted at me that I was perfect and a genius and made me stop talking. I mean, come on, I may be in Calc BC, but If I had scored 0.3% percent lower on my Calc BC Sem 1 exam, I would have had a C on my transcript. I feel like they don’t get it.

And I effing hate being called perfect.

Exactly. While I don’t hate these people because it’s not really their fault , I find it frustrating how they think I’m perfect and everything comes and will come to me easily. I can’t even voice out the slightest anxiety over college or SATs because they’ll look at me like I’m crazy or bragging. I’ll probably explode someday from keeping it all inside.
haha hey! that’s why I got you guys right? CC keeps me from internally imploding :]

For Gods sake, just take it in stride. So what if they think you’ll be getting into Harvard “for sure”? It’s a compliment. Just let them know you appreciate it/thanks/whatever. No need to correct them about it…

And yeah, I’m in much the same boat. But geez, it’s not a terrible problem to have.

EDIT: Uh-oh. Looks like we found another way to sneak our stats in under the guise of humility!

Zomg yes sooo many people say this! I try to explain just how hard it is to get into a school like Harvard, but they won’t listen! “Zomg, you got a 2300 on ur SAT’s freshman year and you are rank 1. you’re going to harvard”
NOOO!!!
They just don’t understand. I wish they could find out about CC and realize the truth. Yet, my self-centered side tells me to keep CC secret, so that no one else will find out about this treasure trove of college admissions information.

In the nicest way I can possibly say this, Get over yourself.
I’m sure lots of people already know that it’s hard to get into Ivies. Most are either just kidding around or being nice. I mean what’s wrong with them saying something nice about you?

Would you rather they called you a geek, stuffed you in a locker, and gave you wedgies?

And do you really have the nerve to say that you hate them? You were given the opportunity to succeed by your environment and your genes. Since you succeed at the SAT and some people don’t, they’re suddenly so much worse than you? That’s such an elitist point of view.

In reality a 1440 will go to college. Most will get a job that they like. They’re not freaks.

Okay, obesechicken, the word hate is obviously hyperbolic. I do not actually detest the people. Am I annoyed by the fact that I can’t express my own college anxieties because I am viewed as an impeccable candidate by my peers? Yes. Of course I am. Ironically, the best candidates are the most anxious, and for good reason. Half of these kids say, “Well, you know you’re going to college.” Of course I know I’m going to college, but it’s whether or not I will go to the school that I want to go to. Also, it’s annoying that if I get a 96% on a test in English or Spanish I get mocked. Granted I’m beating myself up on the inside over the 4 pts and how I missed them, but I still don’t need the crap.

Yeah lol everyone figured I’d get in everywhere (even tho I doubted I’d get into any of my reaches). I don’t hate them tho…it’s flatterring.

to those types of people, high achieving students who show doubt in their chances of getting into a good college is on the same level as a skinny girl complaining that she needs to lose weight. they think that students with great applications are just showing anxiety for attention. it’s unfortunate, but what can you do.

You’re all basically prodigies, so this should be expected!
