I'm waiting for D to make it home from school so we can start our spring break college tour- so I've been doodling.

Here's the thought I've been mulling over. Maybe y'all have thought about it, too, at some point. If en masse we (and our legion of lurkers) decided to select a specific college for next year's applicants, we could substantially impact the demographics of that entering class. A school a notch or two away from the tip-top lottery schools. Overnight, that selected school's demo changes with just 50 kids , maybe 200 at the larger LAC's.

We could vault a school upwards and guarantee some diversity in income ,outlook, geography, religion, race , all the things most of us want for our kids as we are a fairly diverse group. If we have any unanimity it is that we want the finest challenging ,safe, exciting, diverse UG college experience for our kids that we can or choose to afford that best prepares them for the next stage of their life, whatever that may be.

It's interesting thinking about how relatively view folks it would take to change the future of a small college.

And here all I've been doing while awaiting my son's arrival has been computer shading an Alcohol Blood Level chart (customized by sex and weight).

For example-we have several female athlete"s parents posting regularly. If en masse they decided to all attend XYZ and play field hockey-that school's field hockey program will be impacted substantially, as would their musical theatre program, or their school paper IF that grouping of kids went to XYZ, also. A few years back (4 years ago?) 3 summer teammates decided they would all go to huge Kansas State and join the women's basketball team and get them on the national radar. They succeeded like gang-busters.

you could be onto something....perhaps we could call it the "cc hook"', and just send 50 apps in one package to the adcom of xx school. It could be all or nothing for that adcom.

It definitely could result in a wsj article.

achat, I'm just "jabbering" but I guess what I am postulating is that we have, to my knowledge, one of the larger communities of parents of kids who aspire to and "deserve" an opportunity to attend a wonderful school for their UG. The power, if you will, of that community IF it moved as one could substantially change the direction, makeup, diversity of a small college. Not that we would ever agree to march in lockstep, only that it would take relatively few like minded students to change a program or ec within a small school, or even the school itself.

(I wonder if this is how revolutions start? CC parents of the world unite! LOL. Cool-can I be Che'? I own camo and would look pretty dang swell in a beret.)

Kinda like when all those Libertarians decided that Vermont (or was it NH?) should become "their" state, and if they all moved there, they could substantially impact the vote, and make it a Libertarian state? I remember this was big news for awhile....

Curmudge, the only problem I see with this cozy little scenario is how will you ever get 50 parents on this forum to agree on anything, let alone which admissions "ballot box" to stuff! You need to get on the road Curmudgeon, too much time on your hands ;).

cangel, as a professional, would you say that boredom can cause delusions?

I apologize for my musings but I have to keep feeding the squirrel something or he'll stop spinning the little wheel in my head, and I am sore afraid I might not be able to get him started again. I'll try to restrain myself.

Cur, you have way toooo much time on your hands. However, I think the term "the CC mafia" applies to your line of thinking. Just let me know what school you find that will fit all and all my worries will be eliminated. Have a terrific trip. :)

Just occurred to me that maybe we should just all join forces and start our own college. In fact, there's a city near me here in So. California that is offering land to attract a private college. (The UC's weren't interested). Good weather (an hours drive to snow in the winter for those who want it), proximity to Mexico for fun and community service, the ability to plan our "own" school. What shape would it take?

The Socratic method, with mandatory debate classes. Majors are art history, musical theater, Latin, personal finance, history, comparative literature and winter clothing. Minors include world travel, psychology, and most non-dead languages.
Campus buildings are an even mix of Mediterranean/Spanish (think Stanford) and good old fashioned red brick Colonial. The cafeteria is Gothic (the Harry Potter look) and the math department is circa 1970s schlock.

Campus amenities include pool tables, massages, and Antabuse for those under 21. Dorm rooms are NOT coed, but dorms are coed by hall and allow all pets except reptiles, amphibians and elephants.

Bicycles can be rented.

The campus is fully wired, and all laptops have CC as a home page ;).

Now who has too much time on their hands?! Yes, boredom can cause delusions, particularly if you are staring at a blank wall plus bulletin board, as I am.Have a great trip, Curmudge and daughter!

cangel, you've thought about THAT before. That came too trippingly to the tongue. Too easy. You are (might be) just as nuts as I am , I'm just unable to hide it very well. But if I'm wrong and that is just what flowed as an instantaneous stream of consciousness rant-send in your app, and I'll pay your nut club dues for you. Next meeting around the fifth of next month-remember it's BYOD, bring your own delusion.

If we all send our kids to this small LAC, will the CC crowd garner the take of the merit $? Will we BE the top 25%??

I'm liking Cangel's plan, my youngest is grade 10, can we get it togther by then? Can we market to kids who should have gotten into their fav Ivy and were denied for "no good reason" :p Auto-admits to the kids who are denied each ED round?

Ah! The piece de resistance - all courses are online! Now who's cool?

My problem is I've been at work for 26 of the last 28 days, and I'm close to losing it. My nearest time off is the end of the month - does anyone know good Tex-Mex restaurants in San Antonio - non-touristy?

cangel, I eat at mi tierra restaurant in El Mercado. Very good. Everything downtown is a little touristy . At least this is "authentic been there forever touristy". Excellent cabrito and other regional specialties. Google it. I just did and it is still getting good write-ups.You might like it . And the market is a bustling place.

Cangel, make the dorms suite style with private bedrooms for each kid and add my daughter's name to your mailing list. I particularly like the bicycle part.

And, the nice thing is there are some great Mexican restaurants here in San Diego to satisfy student tastes . I'm sure they could set up branches on campus. We'd need to import Pizza from New York though - haven't found really good pizza locally. Now I'M hungry.

Curmudgeon, ok, you sold me. Let's pick a small college then and move on to our scenario construction, if you will! This could be a fun exercise.
