Dorm assignments: Potential nightmare?

Hi All, I received my dorm assignment about 15mins ago, and I've been reviewing the dorm + roommate. I was selected for Donlon, which I heard is the most lively dorm (may be a good or bad thing). The problem is, I can't sleep with any noise or light, and it seems I was completely mismatched with my roommate. The "survey" was completely useless!

1 is on the left, 5 is on the right.

Mine:
Going to Sleep
I tend to go to bed at... 1am

Musical Instrument
I play a musical instrument, and will want to practice sometimes in my room. No

Room Condition
My room condition is generally... (3/5)

Room Socializing
The social condition of my room will most likely be... (2/5)

Sleep Background Noise
I sleep with background noise (music, TV, fan, etc.) or light on in room. Never

Smoking
Do you smoke? No

Study Background Noise
I study with background noise (music, TV, fan, etc.). Never

Wakeup
I tend to wake up at... 7am

His:
Going to Sleep
I tend to go to bed at... 12am

Musical Instrument
I play a musical instrument, and will want to practice sometimes in my room. Yes

Room Condition
My room condition is generally... (3/5)

Room Socializing
The social condition of my room will most likely be... Lively (1/5)

Sleep Background Noise
I sleep with background noise (music, TV, fan, etc.) or light on in room. (2/5)

Smoking
Do you smoke? No

Study Background Noise
I study with background noise (music, TV, fan, etc.). (3/5)

Wakeup
I tend to wake up at... 7 a.m.

As you can see, it seems that I was completely mismatched! I am most worried about the musical instrument, background sleeping noise (absolutely cannot sleep with noise or light) and the background study noise. Also given that I am placed in Donlon, the loudest of the dorms, it seems I am royally screwed. Is this something I should be worried about, or am I over-reacting?

You’re overreacting.

It’s possible that this is the first time you are living with someone that is not family. If that’s the case, there’s one thing you should keep in mind - you are living with another (most likely) reasonable person. This means that you can ask to shut the lights off when you are sleeping, ask your roommate to put on headphones if the noise is too loud, and ask them to practice playing their musical instrument somewhere else (in a lounge perhaps) if it really bothers you. Couple that with the fact that you may not run into each other that often (class times, club meetings, etc.) and you’ll realize that you’re going to be fine.

Stryke has said some good stuff. I will add:

1) it’s also really hard to know what your habits will be when you’re actually in college, and that applies to both you and your roommate.

2) it looks like you’re actually pretty well matched for being strangers.

3) send your roommate a message now before panicking too much!

There are quiet places to study in Donlon if you need them; but there is probably going to be at least one noisy person on your floor. That doesn’t necessarily mean your floor will be noisy at all times, because it certainly won’t be. The RA’s in Donlon (and really North in general) also tend to be very vigilant about enforcing rules and stamping out disturbances, so I wouldn’t worry if anything crazy happened.

I’m in Donlon too but I’m not that noisy and nor is my roommate so you’ve got a friend in us :P

Hi Guys, thanks for offering another viewpoint about this. Stryke is absolutely correct. I sent a message to my roommate, and he seems like a great guy!

Faustarp is also correct that no one really knows what our habits will be. Things will change, and that’s a fact.

hey!
You can buy a black glass-shaped eye cover to block any light when you are sleeping and buy an earplug (or simply, cotton bud) to block any noise.Even if I still live at my house, I still using it everyday.
On campus is awesome since you have a lot of friend.
