I just found out about my acceptance into Cal Poly yesterday, and of the school’s I’ve been accepted into, it’s near if not at the top of my list. But I still have 1 school that I’m very interested to hear from that doesn’t report until April 1st. If I do choose Cal Poly but don’t agree until after April 1st, will I be pretty much at the back of the line for dorm assignments? Heck I don’t even have any idea which one I would want, but I’d hate to be in the worst one. Taking that a step further, should I worry that I won’t get housing at all? A lot of what I’ve ready about Cal Poly so far makes it sound like there is not enough housing for all of the freshman.

Great question, I have same one. I would think many wonder about this because these acceptances are going out so far ahead of other schools. Although tempting, ya can’t accept at a school just to get a good spot in the housing line…Hope someone can help with this.

I think generally the earlier you apply for housing here, the better your chance at getting your top pick. They try really hard to accommodate all the freshmen who want to live on campus. Sometimes this means converting study rooms into 4-6 person rooms. This situation is usually temporary though, since spots in the regular dorm rooms tend to open up as people either leave school, move off campus, get kicked off campus, or fail out of school. So you are pretty much guaranteed housing, just not necessarily the ideal housing situation.

They used to let people apply for housing before accepting their admission offers, I think. But I’m pretty sure this is what lead to them actually running out of on campus housing (this was before Poly Canyon opened though), so a bunch of freshmen had to live off campus. They changed the process, so this can no longer happen.

What are your thoughts on housing after April 1st?

As I understand it, you can’t apply for housing until you have accepted Cal Poly’s offer of admission.

On March 5th, all students who have accepted their offers of admission will start making their housing selections online. It is a “first come first serve” system. So those who start applying first will get priority. I don’t know what it entails exactly if you don’t apply until after April 1. I am sure there are many in the same situation.
