Do internationals generally end up being roomed with other internationals? 'Coz it looks like most of the US people who have gotten their assignments are roommates with other locals... Is that a correct observation?

I don't believe this the case, but do not know for sure. In my S's dorm there were many international students and the ones he knew were generally matched with "locals."

Directly from the University of Chicago House System paper that they included in the housing mailing:

"Our goal for roommate assignments is to create groups that share similar day/night and quite/noise [side note: not a typo by me, wonder if it was one by the University?] preferences, and which are slightly distinct in terms of geographic location, hobbies, or academic interests. . .Assignments are made without regard to race, religion, sexual orientation, age, disabilities, or other factors irrelevant to participation in the University of Chicago programs."

I don't know how much that helps or settles you any. However, most US students have already received their housing assignments, so if you have yet to be contacted by a future roommate, there's a good chance he or she is not national? I'm from West Virginia and I'm rooming with an Illinois resident and a North Carolina resident. You're right, that does seem to be the norm.

My roommate is from Singapore..and I'm from Minnesota.

Ok, I'll just patiently wait for the mail- but the wait is a KILLER!! Thanks for the responses!

My S just received an email from the University with the name and address of a first year that is to be his, and another friend's, roommate (they are in a triple). It is possible to end up rooming with 2nd year students as well.

He dropped the new student a card welcoming him to the University and offering to answer any questions and assuring him of a good year, and further, to bid a fond farewell to his social life (I'm just kidding on the last one).

You're kidding! While I'm sure that being roommates with a Sophomore will have it's perks, I really hope I'm not one of those people.

I'm oddly roomed with 3 4th year students in a quad apartment in Shoreland, Bishop house- go figure

-anything's possible

Remember, more than 120 students sent in deposits than had been anticipated. Y'all got to go somewhere. :)
