Anyone know when Freshman dorm assignments are sent? Just feels like hanging in limbo since orientation isn't until end of August, and no word on roommates, dorm assignments. Daughter is ready to transition into a college girl yet not much she can do at this point.

My daughter is in Nicholson, third floor. Also Botetourt. They are supposed to be the least desirable dorms on the campus. Did you daughter request a small/coed dorm?

D will be trying myspace and facebook later tonight. If that fails I guess she'll do e-mail. She's anxious to make contact before shopping in earnest. Good luck to your D...sounds a bit like mine.

The Botetourt dorms are most certainly the least desirable. But in the end, you'll become really close to your dormmates as you bond over your lousy location, no air conditioning, narrow hallways, poor lighting, and of course the roaches. On the positive side, your rooms are of decent size, and you have nice big desks.

Really, it's not as bad as it sounds, I was third-floor Fauquier too, and I survived. It's true that the people you live with will make the experience more than something petty like air conditioning. You might argue otherwise for the first two sweltering weeks, but you'll see what I mean soon enough.

How about Brown? There hasn't been much talk about it at all, other than it's being lumped into the "less desirable" group. Can anyone throw out a few generalizations about it?

Daughter has an international student as a roommate...guess why she couldn't locate her. Going to be interesting. Now looking for some room basics as her roommate will not be able to bring much with her. Fortunately, her aunt's family leases much of the student housing at another university. Has a storeload of dorm leftovers for the taking.

My younger son was in Yates his freshman year -- loved it. Reasonably good location, just across from "the Caf" (foodservice), trees out the window to promote tranquility during study breaks and even air conditioning: what's not to like?
