My daughter was just assigned to the First Year Experience in Hubbard Hall at MSU. I am wondering what rep. Hubbard Hall has. I was a student at MSU in the mid 80's and I am wondering if the reputation is the same. Any thoughts on Hubbard?

Well, how to say this nicely…
Hubbard is not the best hall to be placed in. I knew a few people who lived in Hubbard and hated it. I’ve never heard a nice thing about Hubbard, other than the bananas in the cafeteria are actually ripe!

I got put there as well, and although I have never actually SEEN it, other than when I took the tour (and honestly, I could not tell you which is which from that), it doesn’t look THAT bad.

Edit: Too bad it looks to be in the middle of nowhere =/

Hubbard is honestly not that bad!!! A lot of people who are actually in the hall like it a lot (don’t really know the specifics though-the cafeteria is generally decent). The biggest complaint I’ve heard coming from Hubbard is the fact that it is far away from most things.

This year they have made Hubbard the hall for the students participating in The First Year Experience. This a program to help the students transition to college. From what I have heard, there is only one floor of former Hubbard residents living in Hubbard. The rest are first year students. Other than the location, I think the assignment is a good one. I lived in Holden, so I’m a bit biased, but I like south complex.

I lived in Hubbard my freshman year before they had this whole First Year Experience thing and have been working in the cafeteria for the last 3. Despite what most people say, Hubbard really isn’t a bad dorm. The bus stops right in front of South Hubbard, unlike most dorms so you won’t have to wait out in the cold during winter. But CATA is making changes to its route so I don’t know if that will be the case this Fall. Everyone always says that it’s far away, but it’s only a few minutes away from Grand River if you take Hagadorn straight up. I personally think that it’s easier to get to GR from East than from South. Hubbard is also considered (one of) the most ethnically diverse dorms on campus, which I kind of appreciated because I lived in Mayo my second year and my roommate, myself, and two others were the only black students in the entire building. So the diversity will really allow you to grow in terms of the new cultures you will come across. When I lived there it was also considered a “party dorm,” as there was always loud music or something going on during the weekends, but I never really had a problem with studying during my stay in Hubbard-just be careful to not get distracted. Most of the people I met in East Complex were also pre-med majors/science majors, but I’m sure there won’t be a problem if you aren’t.
There’s a pretty nice sized field between Hubbars, Akers, and Fee so if you’re into sports and the like there’s always room to play, it is also right across from IM East.
Once upon on time Hubbard did have the best cafeteria on campus and when I was an incoming freshman I had also heard good things about the food, but it has long lost that title and honestly isn’t anything different from most of the cafeterias on campus.

Hope this helps!
