I really want to be in the Quad, that would be awesome but I don’t know that much about it. I know it’s supposed to be the most social, freshman-based… which ones do you guys want to be in and why? Let me know if you’re going to freshman preview day or something in April where we can check out the dorms.

(1) Hill is in the quad, right? And I heard the singles are pretty big. Why is Hill not really anyone’s first choice?

(2) What dorms have private bathrooms? How many people share one bathroom?

(3) Are any of you applying for / are in a residential program, how do you like it, what do you do?

(4) Are you guys getting a single/double/suite and why?

If you’re only going to answer one of these questions, #2 is the most important… although they all are… I’ve been dying to know for a long time.

I probably will be going for the freshman preview. Do we get to stay on campus for the previews?
I think the highrises have private bathrooms. I think hill and quad are the ones with communal bathrooms.

I don't know anything about the preview. Are you coming from out of state? I don't know if I'll be able to fly out there. So all the ones in the quad have shared bathrooms?

hill is not in the quad, in fact i think there's a friendly rivalry between these two dorms. quad has nice rooms and is the most social dorm on campus (at least thats what i've been told), hills has small rooms but a cafe on the bottom floor...so they are probably gonna be my top two choice...i want a single, don't know if i will get one tho. = /

Hill isn't part of the quad. It's generally scorned for it's small rooms and not-so-convenient location. And it's pretty ugly compared to the quad.

I thought hill has the most convenient location. The older posts say it is located close to the math/engineering/science classes.
I had decided against the preview seeing how much it would cost (I am flying from nevada). But I need to check out the campus before deciding my housing choice.
Currently I like the gregory house and modern language program.

Tenebrousfire, tell me more about ware. What room do you and your friends have and how do you like it?
Are the bathrooms really that gross? Who cleans them?

enders_game--I called them up after getting accepted. There are a few weekends in march and april where they hold the previews. I think you just show up for them...not sure though. I am gonna call them up next week again.

(1) Hill is in the quad, right? And I heard the singles are pretty big. Why is Hill not really anyone's first choice?

-Hill is not in the Quad. Hill is a box on 40th and Walnut with terrible rooms. They're not very big, and the hallways feel like dungeon corridors. Living in Hill feels kind of like a jail, but the people are mostly pretty cool and social.

The Quad houses are Ware, Riepe, and Fisher-Hassenfeld. These are the dorms that are most stereotypically college dorm rooms. Decent size, I guess, mostly doubles, shared bathrooms by floor.

(2) What dorms have private bathrooms? How many people share one bathroom?
The high rises, Harnwell, Harrison, and Rodin are the dorms with private bathrooms, typically it would be 2-4 sharing one bathroom

Are you sure that you are from Penn PhatAlbert? :) As a freshman living in Hill right now, i can say that it is the place which offers the best social atmosphere in the campus for freshman. Almost everyone gets to know each other as you spend most of your time in the common areas in the building which is equivalent to meeting 500 people. :) The double rooms are pretty small and the building is quite old however, you can go and have your breakfast without having to get out and walk 200m. Also, it is located on 34th street which is next to the Engineering, Chem building and DRL(Math+Physics department) i.e. you can leave your room at 9.55 and be at class on time. So in short, if you asked me whether i wanted to stay in Hill for another year, i would definitely say no. However for creating your own circle of friends there is no place better than hill for the first year. If you are interested in one of the residential programs go for it. I now live in the Medical care& challenge suit and it is nice to see people who share similar interest with you like going to the med school or studying something similar like BE or Biochem.

I didn't say anything critical of the social atmosphere. The social atmosphere in Hill is very good. All my comments were directed twoards the physical condition of the building.

Other parts of Hill, location, having a dining hall, socializing, are all tres bien.

im going to be a freshman in the fall and, ideally, would like to be in a single in the quad. i was wondering about how difficult it is to get one and what happens if i am not given one. any advice regarding singles and housing requests would be greatly appreciated

I'm thinking Fisher Hassenfeld, but am 80% sure that I want to be in the Quad. The only other things are maybe Ware's study of infections diseases residential program in increase my chances of living in the quad, or premeding it at Hill.

i originally thought about gregory. liked the idea about having roommates and yet not having to share a bedroom. private bathroom. i also like the modern language program. but since it is so far from my engineering classes it will be tough. yeah and also we will have to clean our own bathroom which doesn't really appeal to me
My choices are now hill single (the medical challenge program) and ware single (women in science)
i wonder how far the quad is from engineering. also is it easy to get a single in hill if i put is as my first choice.
