Dorm Beds

Hey,

So I am a high school senior who is thinking about college shopping over the next few months in hopes of catching sales when I see them. As my thread title suggests, I was wondering about college dorm beds. I have heard the standard horror stories about sheets not fitting XL beds, but I was wondering, for duvet covers/comforters, can I get by with a twin size if it is larger (runs say 68x86)? I was hoping to save on money/convenience by buying a larger twin comforter and then just making sure my sheets are labeled twin XL.

Thank you!

I have a normal comforter, it’s no big deal.

I feel like duvets are always a little bigger than the normal size comforter, so you should be good.

I have a standard twin comforter and it fits just fine. I freaked out about it too but my Grandma insisted it would be fine when we bought it, and she was right. I’m not sure if I’ve ever actually even seen a twin XL comforter.

Marshall’s has x-long mattress pads .which you should buy for a cleaner sleep surface .They come in for back to school events ,late summer.

The comforter doesn’t matter…sheets are all you need to worry about. Even a standard twin mattress pad would be fine.

If you get stretchy sheets (like T-shirt sheets… I love those so much) then they’ll actually fit XL Twin mattresses fine too.

I just went to Bed Bath & Beyond and got a dorm-in-a-box package that came with twin XL sheets/comforter, two pillows with cases, a hamper (which everything was neatly packaged in), and probably something else I’m forgetting. This package was also cheaper than those offered by colleges.

Thank you zchryevns!

Thank you all for your responses! That’s really great to know! I am trying to snag things when they are on-sale between now and college, so was worried I might end up getting to college with something I had bought to long ago to return.

The best time to buy things is over the summer. Bed, Bath & Beyond always has great sales (sign up online for fliers for 10% off everything) and they carry just about everything you’ll need.

[Residence Hall Linens ? XL Sheets, Linens, Dorm Bedding](http://www.rhl.org/store)

The other great thing about Bed, Bath & Beyond is that if you are going away for college, you can ask them to just reserve the items you want at the store nearest your college and pick them up when you arrive.

If you get a mattress pad, then be sure to pay close attention to the measurements. I have found a lot labeled as being twin XL with a length measurement of 78" when the length of a twin XL is 80".

I’d watch out for Residence Hall Linens (RHL). My friend got stuff from there and the quality was just awful. No way her sheets are going to hold up past a year, and they’re itchy too.
