Dorm choices

so i can’t really decide on which dorm to pick. i heard the clark kerr dorm is like all jocks. is this true? because the rooms are really big and seem nice. anyone who go there have any feedback? or does anyone know which unit is the best to pick? any feed back on rooming would be really appreciated.

i live in clark kerr, my floor has 23 girls and 9 guys, no jocks tho, o wait yea we do, the quarterback for the cal football team =) but thats about it............and i'm asian.......which doesnt mean anything.......

Clark Kerr is 6 blocks away from campus, right? That's about how long a walk? And in terms of convenience? (considering Foothill and Bowles are a lot closer...)

no, only 4, but there are hills, so that might make it seem like 6, but its not........

You'd think Foothill and Bowles are close to campus. You'd be wrong. You'd think walking up that bloody hill every day would get easier as the year goes on. You'd be wrong again.

That being said, if you don't mind sweating a bit, then Foothill is real nice.

Which dorms are the quietest?

I want to stay away from all the partiers, drinkers, pot smokers, etc.

I live at Clark Kerr. We're pretty quiet on the first floor. My floor is filled with undecided people. There aren't 30% asians here. It's totally not like the nerdy Berkeley you would expect. Now, it gets loud in our room only cuz they party/drink in our room. Otherwise, I think living here is ok.

If you live in the 24-hr quiet buildings then you should be fine. CKC is ok

Now, if you want super quiet where ppl hide in their rooms all day, its Foothill. Foothill is right across from the engineering buildings and hence most engineers live there. Plus there are a lot of 2nd yrs 3rd yrs (obviously engineers who can't live in apartments cuz they would kill the place by not lceaning up). Sorry for the stereotype. I'm an engineer too but at least I keep my room clean and I'm no nerd =P. Oh yea, there are hella Asians at Foothill. That place is crazy. I see half my HS there and a bunch of ppl I know from before.

The units are social definitely. They get loud though, especially Unit 3. Still, I think it would be fun to live there.

As for distance. I think Foothill is CLOSE. Trust me. If you are a freshman and you're taking Chem 1A, Bio 1A/1B, Chem 3A, CS61A, Math, EECs, FOOTHILL IS CLOSE. IT is right across the street from Cory (EECS hall), and like 5 min away from Pimentel (the lecture hall you're going to dread). It's 5 min away from chem lab.

If you're gonna have classes in Dwinelle, VLSB, etc, Unit 3 or Unit 1 can be ok. Unit 2 is a bit further but still manageable I like south side, so Unit 1 is very accessible. Even after chem or math, I still walk down sproul to GBC.

Clark Kerr is far. I sweat to walk back sometimes. Come on, it won't be a problem though. Plus, you'll learn to take the bus(free). I learned the #7 time table for the times I get out of class so I can time myself perfectly well.

nanday0: quietest are Foothill and Stern, no doubt about that. Too quiet sometimes...I haven't seen some of my suitemates in weeks...

If you want quiet, you can always get an apartment 2nd year. For your first year, I would highly recommend living in the Units or Clark Kerr. Experience college the way it's meant to be experienced. If you think it's too loud, move out next year. You can have quiet seclusiveness later.

Is its truly mostly engineers at Foothill? Or do you still get a good mix of other things?

I would say its a HIGH percentage of engineers. There are certainly others, but like half the population of Foothill is engineers.

Thanks guys.

Mostly asian engineers at foothill...I'd fit right in.

Actually, I chose chemistry as my major, but I plan to switch to chemical engineering.

I've heard horror stories from my friends having bad roommates who drink and party while my friends try to sleep or study. I want to stay away from that as much as possible.

I know you'd fit in, but I would seriously consider going elsewhere. If you have friends be sure to go with them. I know I'd fit right into Foothill. I applied there last yr, and didn't get it. This year, I sure as hell did not apply for Foothill. I applied for the Units and Clark Kerr. It's not that I'm a super social person. I just prefer to be in a place with more livelihood.

Plus when you do housing applications, you can have preferences on your study habits and what kind of roommates you hope to be wtih.

Now, my friends and I chose to go random so we could experience something new. I ended up with roommates that party while I work. I guess that's not too cool, but I always have the lounge and library.

It mostly matters WHO you room with. Where you room with won't disturb ur studies too much. Just make sure you can have fun where you room.

Which unit is the best one for a moderate blend of social-ness and study?

I think you can ALWAYS study in your room. As long as your roommates aren't ghetto and stuff. Most of the time that shouldn't be a problem. Tell them to put on headphones or make sure you selected your living preferences right on your app.

I would personally pick Unit 1 or 2. Make sure you get a double, not a triple. It's kinda hard when you have 2 other friends cuz then you really want to be together in a triple but you don't really want to do a triple. If you really want the triple you can do Clark Kerr.

Clark Kerr works for studying/socialness too. You can live in a 24 hr quiet building meaning ppl can't pump music 24/7, and you can still chill with people. If you really want more activity, you can walk next door to the louder buildings. I live in Building 4 for example (24 hr quiet building). Our floor is quiet, but when they party, they party in our room. Building 3 next door is the party dorm so we can always walk there and chill.

Foothill... just don't count on it. Sometimes you'll be lucky, but its not always that cool. A lot of ppl stick with the ppl from their old school/district there. Thats what I see wtih a lot of my friends there.

qwerasdf waht do u mean by the 24 hour quiet building. liek no noise at all? and does that mean that clark kerr has multiple buildings? if so how many?
