Dorm Courtesies - What Should Each Bring?

Hello All,

I move into college on September 6th, and my roommates and I have yet to decide what each of us will bring. I live about 15 minutes from the college that I am attending, while my roommates live in Chicago, LA, and India (by the way, the college in is Massachusetts).

I am already planning to bring the television, but now I am wondering if I should also bring the fridge (microwaves aren't allowed). Is it common practice for the roommate closest to the college to bring the large items? What should I do?

Thanks!

weird since it sounds like you're going to be in a quad but generally each roommate will divide the load. or in some cases one roommate will have everything needed. the idea is that if one of you guys already has the item needed for the room (meaning no money needs to be spent to purchase the item) then that person should bring it. for example my first semester, one of my roommates had a mini fridge and so he brought that. the other had a tv and he brought that. i didn't mind going out and gettin one of those items if needed but since they already had it they didn't mind bring it to the room. save money when possible in this case.

Thank you for the reply! I was also under the impression that it is common practice for each roommate to bring whatever he/she has before deciding what to purchase.

Though, since I live so close to campus, I almost feel as though I am obligated to bring the large things.

Yes, ideally you split the load; however, given that you are a short car ride, and the other three have flights to take, don't force them to bring stuff. You can certainly ask if any of them has a fridge or whatever and can bring it, but if they say no because they can't fly it, then just suggest you guys buy one at the beginning of the year (if you want it). If you know who is planning on keeping it at the end of the year, they can pay for all of it, or you could split it now and decide what to do at the end of the year (e.g. the kid from Chi-town decides he wants the fridge and he pays the rest of you for your shares)
