Dorm decisions

i dont get how a suite with 10-11 kids can be quiter than hallway styled mccormick dorms??

D is a first year at UVa. We just returned from parents weekend there. It reminded me, yet again, why she chose the school and the experience of UVa. Wow. Anyway, she had requested McCormick for reasons stated above--primarily proximity to classes, and social environment. She ended up getting Alderman--a non-echols student in one of the three Echols dorms. She was very upset initially. And now, almost a year later, I asked her if she has any regrets She says that she doesn't for several reasons: 1) A great roommate. That has made the transition SO much easier. 2) The rooms are definately larger. Additionally, beds can be bunked at Alderman (not McCormick), so floor space can be used for other things. They have a large futon and coffee table arrangement where they can comfortably study, watch TV. 3) TWO closets. She absolutely doesn't know how she could have shared one closet--as you do in McCormick. Obviously, you figure out a way. She is just glad she didn't have to. 4) Proximity to athletic building and dining hall. 5)The large common area outside the room. It is used constantly for late night studying, private phone calls, socializing.
With this experience behind her, and knowing what she does now, I asked her if she would actually sign up for Alderman if given the chance. She said that it would be a tough choice. She still feels McCormick is way more social (for whatever reasons-hall style/more homogenous group-who knows), and many of her friends live there. She wasn't sure what she would do, but she did say that it certainly wouldn't be as monumental a decision as it was a year ago. Both areas have real advantages. Good luck.

wat about the dirty bathrooms at alderman..yea everything sounds great but from what i hear mccormick a janitor comes to clean them. Alderman the residents are responsible (so it doesnt get cleaned) thats quit disgusting wat does you daughter think of alderman in that respect?

i went to visit my friend who lives in mccormick and they had 2 closets...it was a corner room though if that makes any difference

lol - yeawhoayea - alderman bathrooms are cleaned daily, so fear not.

o really, but the residents or a janitor? i thought its the responsibility of the kids and you know kids and cleaning

By a janitor. No, it's not the responsibility of the residents. I thought that was implied by the "cleaned daily" part. Your only chore in college will be to study.

yea thats wat i thought but several others on this forum have said alderman is cleaned by its residents, so i wasnt sure

Thanks for the quick answer, cavalier. D's suite bathroom has always been in great shape when we have visited. The only thing that seemed a little unusual at first was the fact that there was no storage area in there for personal items ie: towels, robes, toothbrushes, etc. It keeps the bathroom looking clean and sterile, but neccessitates some organization for carrying personal items back and forth. Everyone figures out their own system...

cavalier302--can you confirm the closet situation in McCormick for vinyard06? We visited several McCormick rooms with only 1 closet. We were told that was the norm. Could the 2 closets vinyard06 saw just be a corner room benefit??

No, I've been in several McCormick rooms where there are two closets. I've also been in a couple where there's only one. I guess it might go building by building or hall by hall or something.

Apply to Brown College y'all. Why?

1) Air-conditioning/heater
2) Your own room - you have a roommate who has his own room (you have your own closet as well) and it's pretty big!
3) A kitchen
4) Two TV lounges; a kitchen
5) Located right in the center of the campus
6) 24-hour computer lab
7) A study room

Doesn't Brown have a sepeate long app to fill out? I was thinking brown too but as an incoming freshmen I would like to be around other first year students, at least my first year. No1 has talked about Malone, its not apart of Hereford. Its near the Aquatic Fitness Center and Scott Stadium appearantly and seems decent? Does anyone want to compare Brown/Malone vs. the others..esp for an incoming 1st year.

yeawhoayea, Malone is very much a part of the Hereford residential college.

Why would you want to mingle with 1st years only? There are also other first-years in Brown, and your first-year experience doesn't not need to be limited to "first-year" for everything. And yes there is a separate application - and it is not that long. It's a fun application. Go to www.brown-college.org and download the application!

There are only thirty or so first years in Brown, as opposed to a couple thousand in the normal dorms. You will meet many non first years in the various clubs and organizations you may commit to, so there are plenty of opportunities to meet non-first years.

The application to Brown is probably the stupidest one I've ever seen.

its not that i dont want to meet nonfirst years its just as a 1st year student i want to be around others in my same shoes...all the others are experienced have their friends and everything so i guess its important that at least next year im around 1st year students

How is the bathroom situation in McCormick vs. Alderman? I realize that in Alderman on average it's 10 kids to two showers and so forth. What about McCormick? It's hall style, so how many students per bathroom/how many bathrooms per floor?

...back to caseyatbat question concerning closets in McCormick Dorm, only 2 dorm bulidings (Bonnycastle and Hancock) have rooms with 2 closets, the rest have one which is kind of miserable.

ummm yes mustang, in McCormick dorms there are 4 showers per floor with about 20-22 people per hall, but 40-44 people per floor that share 4 showers...lol now that I'm writing it out it sounds pretty bad, but it really isn't. I have never had to wait for a shower; we all have different schedules so there will almost always be free shower stalls .

are there more OOS students in any particular dorm?
