Dorm Decor

What are some good ways to decorate a dorm room? One wall is pegboard, the others are painted cinder block.

posters? I don’t know much more then that.

Is that all people do?

We put up Wall Slicks. I thought they looked great and were easy to peel off at the end of the year.

We also put up a valance using lightweight curtain rods and 3M sticky hooks, as the room only had miniblinds.

Our room had carpet, but many people bring area rugs for their dorm room.

Will the wall decals still look okay on cinderblock walls? I was thinking about getting some, but I thought the texture of the walls might make them look funky. And are you allowed to paint your room? Does anybody have any suggestions on making a room look less industrial?

My sister strung her room with posters, pictures, and LIGHTS! Like Christmas lights, except she had a dozen different kinds for different seasons and moods (like Halloween ones with ghosts, witches, and pumpkins with light bulbs instead and “Chinese lantern” lights). I think the lights are a great idea, as are posters. You can also buy and hang fabric for almost no $$$.

Yes. Ours were on cinderblock and I didn’t notice any roughness.

How about decals ob brick, how would that look?

i recently went and bought all my sheets and hanging stuff in shades of blue. now i have to think about ways to break up all that blue so i’m thinking of making a home painting or a home wardrobe paneling to get some color for my side of the room

^What are you thinking of when you talk about home wardrobe paneling?

oh. just a painting/poster. something to hang on the door of a cabinet so i don’t have to stare at the wood. i saw it on oprah’s show where they redid a georgia tech dorm that was way too messy. it adds color and hides the hideous plain wood.

I love postcards but not the touristy kind that can be tacky. I love whatever has a pretty/interesting design, and I never stop buying them. Freshman year, I also bought a bunch of art auction catalogues and cut out the pictures to put on my wall. The catalogues sold for 2-5 dollars at a used bookstore, so they were a cheap way of decorating my room. Also, if you have old calendars that you like, you can rip out the pages to put up. Christmas lights and hanging fabric are also good ideas. If your room doesn’t have carpeting, you can get a nice area rug that adds a splash of color.

Dirty clothes on the floor.

Well, that’s what I did, anyway :)

Hideous plain wood? I have never found plain wood to be hideous.

Either way, posters seem to be the most common way to go. Watch out in terms of hanging extra curtains or tapestries/fabric, because this is in violation of fire codes at some schools. My roommate also used the wall stickers, and they worked pretty well, but some fell off of the painted cinderblock. It was kind of funny because she had written “why war?” in stickers on the wall. Eventually, there was a piece of furniture obscuring the “why” and the w fell off of war, so all you could see was
“ar?” I’m weird and it made me think of an inquisitive pirate, so I thought this was pretty funny.

Another thing you can do is get some butcher paper and decorate it. My boyfriend and his roommate had friends who decided that their room looked too plain, so they made them giant fingerpaint posters for their wall. They were actually pretty interesting to look at, and cost almost nothing to make.
