Dorm Descriptions

Hi so i’m filling out my housing application and was wondering which dorms have same gender corridors and which have mixed gender corridors?

I think that all of the dorms have both single sex halls/floors and mixed sex halls/floors (which is the majority).

You cannot pick a dorm anyway.

True that

You may not get preference either…my daughter went in with a friend request for a coed floor…but were put on an all female wing…but wound up in Hill dorm so was elated…

For his freshman year my son and several guys on his floor also requested a coed floor and ended up with an all boys floor (South Quad/honors). I imagine the numbers don’t always work out to give everyone their preference.

My daughter found a roommate on facebook and after she has chosen her the girl told her that her doctor was sending a note that she needs to have closer access to health facility and away from the bus because of a chronic health condition (Diabetes as well as some sort of gastro-intestinal disease.) My daughter is certainly not counting on this “working” to get them a preferred dorm. Does anyone know how accommodating Michigan is on these things? I’ve heard a lot of kids try to “game the system.” This girl does not appear to be doing so at all here but perhaps Michigan doesnt’ feel that there is any need for preferred dorm here.

UMich has a great hospital system and it is right on campus. It is within a few minutes no matter where you are on campus. I don’t know what you mean by “away from the bus”. The Blue Buses on campus are quite environmental friendly, many of the city buses too. Markley is probably the dorm closest to the hospital but you are not likely to walk there anyway in emergency situation. So I don’t know if the housing office would do anything for these request.

I heard of countless people flooding housing with doctor’s notes, with every ailment imaginable, to try and secure a preferred housing assignment on South Campus or the Hill. This past year Housing asked for substantial documentation from the health care professional providing a note and it was my understanding that many “suspect” medical conditions were denied. In addition, I knew of at least 2 people who sent in doctor’s notes and requested roommates. They both received phone calls from Housing asking which was more important, as only one request could be accommodated. Trust me, they’re pretty wise to these schemes.

My daughters potential roommate has a lot on her FB page going way back indicating that she has diabetes and A rare gastro disorder (walks in support various discussions of hospital visit) so I’m sure that the conditions themselves are real and substantial documentation won’t be an issue but whether these would get her any preferred housing I don’t know. I’d be surprised though if they made her choose between a roommate and the housing she needed if they agreed she needed it. That would likely set them up for a violation of disability protection laws.
