Hey everyone! I have been accepted to UO class of 2021 and it is very likely that I will be attending. Can a current student give me a description of all each of the dorms (like which would be best fit for different kinds of people/their reputations)? How hard is it to get into Global Scholars if you aren’t a CHC student? Thanks!
I am also interested in finding out about the dorms. My d was accepted here but is still waiting on decisions from other schools. Would it make sense to put in a housing deposit just in case?
@LilyMoon I am also waiting to hear back from other schools, but I put in a deposit anyway. I called the UO housing office twice for information and they are very helpful. They confirmed that housing is first come, first served. So the earlier someone submits their deposit, the more likely it is that they’ll get their top choices of room type and ARC (academic residential community). There is no way to just request a specific dorm, but it is possible to see which ARCs are housed in which dorms. I found three ARCs that I like which are housed in the three newer dorms on campus (Global Scholars, the Living-Learning Center, and the new dorm) and listed those as my top three choices. The deposit was $400, but if I don’t end up attending and I cancel by May 1, I’ll get $350 back. I never did get any info about the reputations of each dorm but looking at what ARCs are housed in each helped me figure things out.
@Fall2017dreaming I had my dd sign up for housing too. Was there a place for her to list ARC’s during sign up? She didn’t mention anything about that. Do you think she can go back and request her choices? For the $50 non-refundable deposit I figured it was worth it. Yes, I saw that the rest is refundable. Thanks for the response!
@LilyMoon Yes there was a place on the housing app to list the preferred ARC’s. The ARC that I selected actually required that I write a couple of short essays describing my interest in the program. It is not required to be in an ARC, but being in one seems like it could be a great way to find like-minded people and it also can be helpful for getting into the newer dorms. Otherwise, there isn’t any way to request a specific dorm. There is probably a way to go back and edit the application (I know that at least roommate choices can be added later on), but if not, I am sure the people at the UO housing office would be happy to help get it changed.
@Fall2017dreaming Thanks for the information. I asked my dd and she told me she did select her preferred ARC’s and put the environmental one first. She was interested in the trip that they take before school starts and since she is a Geology major, the courses fit her interests as well. What other schools are you waiting to hear from?
@LilyMoon I also thought that the environmental ARC sounded great but I ended up choosing the German Living Language one because I did an exchange in Germany & I want to keep speaking German as much as possible. I am waiting to hear from Northeastern and Tulane. What about your daughter?
@Fall2017dreaming I can understand your interest in continuing with the German. My dd took German for one year and went on a trip to Germany with her school but then switched back to Spanish. She loved her visit to Germany so I can imagine you had a wonderful exchange experience. Good luck with Northeastern and Tulane. My dd got wait-listed at Tulane. She is waiting to hear from a bunch of University of California schools. They don’t notify until mid to end of March.
@LilyMoon That’s great that your daughter also had the chance to visit Germany! I did have a great experience and I am definitely hoping to return for a semester of college.
Thank you! Good luck to your daughter with the UC’s!
@Fall2017dreaming Thank you!
