what do i need for the my dorm? & what's already provided? thanks!

good place to start

wow. thanks!

I did a summer program at UCSD so here’s some of the stuff that I forgot.

A Giant Fluffy Pillow

Mini Fridge (Super Important when you need to cram late at night but you know as soon as you get up to get some food you’ll be thrown off your study groove, mini fridge is just an arms length away)

Stapler (omg the horror of walking around campus for 3 hours searching for someone with a stapler, so I could finally turn in my essay)

Real Speakers - laptop speakers suck, and after the first week you’re going to see how awesome social center dorms are the ones with a decent stereo

Febreeze - Febreeze - Febreeze…I’ve never used febreeze before this summer, but it’s absolutely essential. Otherwise when somebody drops the kids off at the pool in the morning, you’ll be permanently scarred for life. Also helps when that drunk B**** from last night pukes all over your floor. If it’s gonna smell like something might as well be febreeze.

Alarm Clock - seems obvious but you’d be surprised how many people forget, esp those not used to waking up on their own.

if I think of anything else I’ll just add it on here

earplugs. they saved my life :P

this might be just me…but hand sanitizer. massive amounts of hand sanitizer is what i’ll be bringing.

+Fan
+Extra chair(s)/seating

Just some random questions:

Ok, a mini-fridge sounds nice. Especially since I’m hopelessly addicted to soda. But they’re kinda expensive for me and seem like a pain to lug around during the move. Worth it?

Same question as above, only with a printer. They’re also pretty expensive and a pain to bring around. Are these necessary? You’d think a school would have plenty of places for printing though?

Laptop security? Do many people use laptops around campus and in class? Is it worth the money to buy one of those security devices?

1) the mini-fridge actually comes in handy. i got the biggest size allowed and not only did my roommate and i used it all the time, but it also was a useful nightstand. what i would suggest is to buy it at the k-mart down there when you arrive to save room when moving.

2) there are plenty of places to print things around campus, but most of them cost money. plus, it’s way helpful to have a printer available when you are working on assignments at 3 am, so i would suggest getting one for your dorm.

if it’s a matter of finance, you may want to talk to your roommate about one of you getting a fridge, and the other getting the printer, although more people are willing to do this with a tv/fridge situation since the matter of ink comes up with the printer.

3) honestly, it’s pretty 50/50 on people who bring laptops to class vs. those who bring just a pen and paper. as far as laptop security, if you mean one of those leashes that hold them to the desk, you will use it rarely. the only time i ever heard of laptops getting stolen was during fssp last year, and off the first floor. but during the school year, i never heard anything.

Thanks for the responses Nolita. I will hold off on those bigger purchases until later.

50/50 actually sounds like a pretty good ratio for laptop vs pen/paper.

I had a laptop lock and I locked it every time I left my dorm room, even if I locked the door. I knew of more than one occurrence where a laptop was stolen right out of a dorm room. The locks aren’t that expensive (~$25) and are a sound investment.
