Dorm for a Freshman Smeal Student

Which residence hall would you recommend for a freshman Smeal student?

You will most likely get East...and that's kind of the best dorm for freshman anyway.

Although East is where most freshmen live, North Halls provide the Business and Society special living option. (A student must be in one of the designated SLOs to live there.) These dorms have been renovated into suites and appear to be very nice. Here's the link for North: http://www.hfs.psu.edu/housing/firstyear/north/

My S is currently living in the Pollock area dorms. Although they are not what would be referred to as 'luxury accommodations' by any means, he says they are fairly quiet and most of the students living there are freshmen or sophomores. He has friends in East and says its a 'little' more lively.

To get a feel for housing, here's the link to PSU's housing site. It will give you more information on the housing available.

Do dorms include pillows and blankets?

no pillows and blankets. Just bare beds, a dresser, a small desk and bookshelves. Sometimes a basic lamp and a bulletin board. BYO!!

Karp: My son is interested in the North Hall. Do you know what he has to do to get in the business SLO? I looked at the links you posted, but couldn't figure that out.

To apply for an SLO you first have to accept your admission to Penn State and send in the fees, and then in a week or two you willl be able to go onto eliving and submit your housing contract. When you submit the contract is when you apply for the SLO.
(it does say engineering and earth/mineral science SLOs require a separate application as well, but since your son is looking for the business one you can disregard that.)
Then in July/August you find out if he got in.
(Also, keep in mind that the North Halls suites cost around $1000 more per year than a regular double.)
