We've read through the dorm housing info but couldn't find anything about removing unwanted furniture. My S and his roommate both want to take their own desk chairs (assigned to Connor; both in-state).

Are the supplied chairs required to stay in the room? Or, can we bring them home to store and return at end of year? If they can be removed, then what about the desk? With a 26" monitor, laptop and MF printer, he will need more desktop space (although we have a friend who would gladly build a hutch and/or wider desktop overlay, if that's allowed as well).

You’re technically required to leave all furniture in your room, but then again, I don’t know how much they actually enforce it. Maybe someone on here knows better than I do.

It’s possible you will want the extra chairs to actually sit on for guests - depending on how much furniture you bring/ use. My son had a futon, plus two “camping chairs” and they used all of it - plus the desk chairs.

You could probably also sit it in your closet and store your laundry basket on top of it and shoes under it.

My son stayed in Connor for CTOPS. He said the chairs were actually pretty nice…they adjust to 3 different positions. And the desk/hutch looked nicer than the model dorm room in Craige.

My chair in ehaus didn’t have different positions! My roommate took her desk chair home and replaced it. We failed the room inspections (with no consequences or anything) and she brought it back on move-out day. No problems at all.

You can always send the unwanted chairs home and then just bring them back at the end of the year, but most people I know would try to fit the extra chairs in the closets and put stuff on them, etc. Pretty sure my roommate and I failed every single room inspection we ever had during all four years, so don’t worry about that… ; -)

Wow, I didn’t know that they had spot inspections in this day and time. Even when I was an RA (eons ago), we didn’t do inspections. Who does these inspections and how often? What violations are they seeking?

As for putting the chairs in their closets, both hope to use an adjustable hanging rod (with chains) to make a double row of hanging space. As guys, they don’t have to deal with long stuff like dresses!

As for the adjustable chairs in Connor, hopefully we can find a way to see their room during CTOPS. They got a corner room with two windows and want blackout curtains. So I need window measurements.

I really appreciate all this insider advice!!

The RAs don’t do random inspections - they’ll just do inspections any time the dorms close for the holidays, etc. For example - when everybody goes home for Christmas, the RAs have to stay behind for a day or so to check out your room. They’re just making sure you haven’t left stuff plugged in or left the window up or have alcohol all over the place. My roomie and I always left hard to reach stuff plugged in (not turned on), so we always got marked off for that. My RA told me they’re not allowed to open your closed closet doors though, so we would usually hide certain things (like our octopus lamp, ha ha) in there.
