I've heard that they're changing the sub-free dorm for next year. Which is a shame, because Basset's bench is hilarious. Also, I believe that they are hand-picking people for Giles. As a resident from last year, I can understand why (and if you ever saw the second floor at night on a weekend... and some weekdays... you would understand). Ah, I'm glad I won't have to live with that again next year, but I couldn't imagine my Duke experience without it.

Really? I was pretty sure the Sub free dorm was staying the same... and yeah Basset's bench makes me chuckle.

Why are they specifically hand-picking Giles? Does it have to do with the vandalism thing?

ETA: Bassett's bench really is amazing. For any non-Dukies: Bassett is the dorm to the left of Brown, and their bench is painted with an arrow pointing to the right and the words "We're With Sober." Hahaha, even if you're in Brown, you gotta admit it's great.

Here's Bassett's bench (:

Just out of curiosity, where is all of this information coming from? I'm an RA next year in East 1 (Alspaugh, Basset, Pegram, Brown), and I heard nothing about it when I attended the RA meetings this spring. The RC for East 1 also did not mention any changes. This doesn't mean it is true or false - they may be making changes, but I was curious to find out where your information is coming from.

ooo, so is it pretty much impossible to get a single if you decide to do FOCUS?

I wouldnt think so... Focus sets which dorm you are going to be in... but you dont room with another Focus person or anything... so you probably have less of a chance for it considering that you are restrained to just singles in one dorm... but you probably still have the POSSIBILITY to get one.

Four years ago (wow I'm old) I knew some FOCUS kids who were in single rooms.

Yeah-- Focus won't prevent you from getting a single room at all.

How would they "hand pick" a dorm -- I mean, aren't they already essentially doing that?

Hmmm, ok. What percent of people who request singles actually get them?

I couldn't give you an exact number on East, but there are plenty. On West this year everyone who requested a single got one. I think if its your first choice and you get your forms in on time, it's likely you'll get one.

I'm not sure if that's true about West. They told us at the housing meeting for our dorm that sophomores basically couldn't have or wouldn't get singles unless that had some medical reason. Thus, if they did allow sophomores to have singles, the true number who wanted them was probably not reflected because of what they told us. I have several friends who would have taken singles if they could have.

As far as East, I think people generally got them if they requested them.

lol, does uncontrollable flatulence qualify as a medical reason for a single?

You see, my friend had the second to last single pick in the entire female lottery. She had at least 10 rooms to choose from. Same thing for the guys. Based on being there at pick lottery, I saw that everyone who requested a single got one. Sophomores weren't allowed to make that request, so therefore, I am not considering them in my statement since they didn't request a single.

They have to accomodate all the upperclassmen who want singles, since there is no other single person housing option on campus. It's an upperclass privilege (other than first year when there are plenty to go around). Since sophomores are the only class required to live on West (which to many is considered a privilege), and your class is very large, they forced juniors who requested West Doubles onto Central. They couldn't ever do that with singles, and people would give hell if they couldn't get a single, not because of a low lottery number, but because some were saved for a lower class year as that drastically changes living plans.

Sophomores without medical conditions can and will still live in singles, but there won't be many. Some sophomores figured some things out, namely, single lottery is first and if you hear there are plenty available, you might as well try and get one.

which dorms on east campus have the walk-in closets?

i think it basically depends on the room. Blackwell and Randolph don't have closets rather just like, I don't know...nooks in the wall.

I believe every room in Jarvis had walkins...BUT sometimes just one...sometimes two. It honestly depends. I've seen rooms with 1 small walk in, 1 gigantic walk in, and mine had 2 decent sized walk ins (and im a girl so decent sized probably translates to huge).

it really does depend on the room, my triple and as far as i know all the corner large triple/double rooms in my dorm had walk in closets

You know, if you're a small enough person, any closet is a walk-in...

i guess i could always rent out everyone else's closets on my floor, or lose 100 lbs. i like the way you think, bluedevilmike!

kidding to both, i think.
but i do plan to pray to the ancient room assignment gods every night before assignments come out.

Is a large 32 in TV going to be practical to fit in most Duke Fresh Dorms?
