hey, im moving into dellplain in a split double,

a couple questions, would i be able to fit a 20-30 inch tv in there? Where do ppl put their tvs?
To people bring lounging chairs/comfortable furniture to sit on?

How are the beds? Should I get extra long? (i'm 6'1) Do you need those mattress enhancers?(things that go in between to make the beds more comfortable?

Where would I put the fridge for a split double, should i get 2 fridges?

My D was in a Dellplain split double last year. She was in the smallest one (you could go on SU website and look at your room to see if you have a small or large one. She had a huge TV which fit in great on the wall when you walk in. We actually bought her a TV stand for $40 at Target when we got up there which also had some shelves. But most TV’s will fit on the top of the fridge. She and her roommate each had their own fridge but that is up to you and your roommate. SU is gradually replacing all of the beds with XL mattresses so even though they tell you you can choose, you can’t. XL sheets fit on the regular beds too. The beds are like cots and you will definitely want a mattress enhancer. Dellplain has really nice furniture - the desk chair is actually an ergonomic rocker and is very comfortable. My daughter could not have fit in a chair but if you have the larger one you might want to. You might want a microwave (or work it out with your roomie for one person to buy the fridge and one to buy the microwave). Every lounge is supposed to have one, but her floor didn’t get one until January.
One side of the split is slightly bigger than the other and that allowed my daughter (who moved in early) to put her bed lengthwise in front of the window. That was great for giving her room.
You should bring a good fan. The dorms are over 80 degrees all year. She had hers running in the winter. The beds are all high so you don’t need those bed risers. A good thing to bring are huge plastic bins which fit under the bed. My D put alot of clothes in there.
She loved Dellplain and would have lived there as a sophomore if she could. It is a great location next to Ernie Davis, the gym, good cafeteria, etc. Have a great year.

Instead of drawers (which I ended up returning), my D has large plastic bins with tops. Two of them fit under the bed, and there was still room for blankets, suitcase, ironing board, vacuum, air dryer. She did use a drawer type standing piece that she got from B and B which was very useful. Also, we bought hooks for the wall which was useful for towels, wet winter coat.

rodney - you seem to know Lawrinson. Are the beds high enough to stack plastic drawers from BB&Beyond underneath? Or do the plastic tubs, as suggested in previous post, work better? If so, how many high can you stack at once - two? Looking at the online virtual tour of a split-double in Sadler, it looks like students are buying those plastic cubes to make shelving space. Are they suggested, or any other shelving recommended? Besides the bed, desk, dresser, and closet provided by SU, what other furnishings should we bring along for a split double?

How is the closet space in a regular split double? Do I need alot of other storage containers/boxes? Is the closet already divided or do I need to buy something for that?

You can see the length of the closet in the room dimensions. It depends on how much clothes you have - I think there were 6 drawers in the built in bureau too. The closet only opens on your side for you and vv for your roommate.
My daughter was in the Whitman LC and it was fantastic. They really bonded. You can participate as much or as little as you like.

Thanks alot about the refrig. Info…
We have only been to the area for an open house…where would be the best place to shop for additional items we may need once we are there?

donna: Target, WalMart and every other store you can think of (except Costco) is within close driving distance

shorething: my daughter has four of the drawers that stacked to create a dresser; in addition, she stored the long rollable boxes under her bed with clothing for the opposite season and boots…

I don’t recommend stacking boxes under the bed (even with risers); it’s just sooo inconvenient to get to on a day-to-day basis…

If anyone has additional questions, please feel free to PM just in case any of the parents don’t see this thread on a daily basis (like me)

My D and I just came back from our local Bed Bath and Beyond…we had fun scanning everything that she needs, and will pick it up at the Syracuse store on move in day. It couldn’t be easier. (They even will accept BBB coupons when you pick up your order or if you over-ordered you can delete it from your order on pick up day). Now the problem is…how do we get everything home in May!!!

simond92: The dorms are hot (maybe I exaggerated alittle) - they are kept at about 75 and they are warm during the day in the summer. There is a big window with a screen and my daughter had a tower fan that she actually put in the window horizontally. I think that only Ernie Davis dorm is airconditioned and I’m sure they would not allow you to bring AC. Plus the windows in dellplain are a strange shape. i think everyone gets used to it. It’s definitely worthed for the location of dellplain.
Any other questions?

Born2runmom: we store anything that is “school related” at Syracuse for the summer; there are at least 3 companies (prob more) that provide storage; they pick up at your dorm and will deliver to your dorm the following fall…i do not advise storage for fragile items though; I think baboons move the boxes…!!

and btw, the BBB in DeWitt on Erie Blvd is one of the biggest I have ever seen; they actually send someone from corporate to run the college program in August (last year she was a senior VP)…in addition, they ALWAYS have more stuff there then any of the other BBB’s that I have seen (so in case you change your mind/want something else/etc, you can get stuff there)…freshman year, people ordered stuff at home, got there and then decided they didn’t want items; everyone was in the back of the store swapping stuff…

Do you have to rent the micro-fridge that is available via the SU bookstore, or can you bring your own? My daughter went to BU and they did not allow you to bring your own, you had to rent theirs. I couldn’t find any guidelines on the SU website. Thanks!

You can bring your own microwave and refrigerator. There is a size limit on the refrigerator (but it is bigger than most of the fridges that kids have). By the way, the housing office is great at answering questions too. Although you are technically not supposed to have them, kids do have hot pots and other small appliances. My daughter had a small panini maker which came in very handy since she would take bread and cheese from the dining hall to make snacks late at night. Generally, the RA’s are very sensible about how much they monitor the rooms.

twoparent: Interesting…my daughter had a lamp confiscated in both Dellplain and Lawrinson; very surprised the panini maker passed muster with the RA’s…
