Dorm Insurance

Our Son is an incoming 2014-15 Freshman. Curious about insuring any personal property such as computer, printer, TV, microwave, refrigerator, etc) I called our home-owners agent to inquire. Our agent for "**" Ins Co said that "theft only" would be covered but it would be best not to rely on our homeowners policy for small claims especially since our deductible is $500. Also, that our policy didn't cover damage or repairs. Also that if we file small claims it might be held against us risking denial of renewal. It was suggested that we look into additional coverage, offered through the college ...

In looking through his college housing information it appears that such additional insurance is not available. I wrote to the school to confirm. If so, any suggestions?

We used CSI Insurance for our kids. Claims were handled quickly and without hassle and the price is reasonable. Much better to get this type of policy with a low deductible.

We used CSI too. I especially liked the spill/drop coverage for the laptop, though we never needed to use it. D did have some furniture damaged due to a water leak, and I was astonished at how very quickly they settled the claim. She took some photos, including photos of the IKEA purchase receipts, filed a quick electronic claim form, and a check for full replacement cost less her ($50?) deductible arrived within two weeks. I don’t get turnaround that quick from State Farm.

OK, thanks!
