First of all let me state I do NOT work for Bed, Bath & Beyond. There may be other stores that offer this but I do not know of them.

When we took my older daughter to college 3 years ago we were not aware of this and it would have saved some room in the car. Bed, Bath & Beyond offers a "pack and hold" program. Basically you get a scanner from the service desk and scan all the items you want. When done shopping they print out the list, you approve it and the order will be packed and held at the BB&B location you select. You pay for it at the time you pick it up. That way you don't have to haul extra stuff in the car all the way to DC.

I think that Wal-Mart also does something similar.

As a side-note, I wish that as a Freshman that I had known that most beds in the dorms are actually twin-sized rather than XL-twin (although, if you’re over a certain height, you’re supposed to be able to request an XL-twin mattress, but I don’t know of anyone that has). I had to use safety pins to keep my sheets from coming off my mattress during the first few weeks until I could buy new ones.

bring the essentials in the car…but dont be afraid to buy stuff once you are there…there is a bed bath and beyond…and a target close to campus. target also shuts down during one of the nights early in the year specifically for gw students and gw buses students there and back to buy some stuff.

bedding question–
S2 will be in Pelham. On one GW website it states that XL twin sheets will fit all GW beds. IN another it says that XL twin beds can be requested…
Does anyone know which beds they tend to actually use?

If you do the pack and hold at BB&B, pick the store located in Columbia Heights. The store closest to GW is right by the Verizon Center/Chinatown. Parking can be an issue there.

With the Columbia Heights store, it is a bit further drive, but Target and BB&B are located right next to each other. It is a big indoor shopping complex with underground parking. Best Buy and Staples or Office max or store like that is also there. Convenient one stop shopping.

You will save yourself a lot of running around if you just go straight to Columbia Heights.

Yes, I called the 2 closest locations before making a decision on which one to use. After talking to someone at the 14th St location I picked that one. Hopefully that is the Columbia Hts location.

Yes, the 14th St location is the one in Columbia Heights. Just one word of caution about driving there - avoid Dupont Circle!!! That has to be the worst intersection I have ever driven through and it can take me 15-20 minutes to get through there. If you Mapquest/GPS directions from GW to Columbia Heights, it will always take your through that darn circle. Grrrrr… Get a map and try to go a few blocks around it. The detour is worth it.

Do the rooms in Thurston come with a shower curtain or do you have to bring one? How about a trash can? Any other specific items that people have found important to bring?

lspf - all GW beds are twin XL.
saf - thurston rooms do come with a shower curtain and trash can. I recommend bringing an additional small trash can to put under your desk.

I also recommend bringing a fan. My a/c didn’t get as cool as I would have hoped, and the fan is also good for white noise when you are sleeping in a room full of people.
Also bring some kind of night table to put a reading light and alarm clock on. Just something plastic and simple that you can throw away at the end of the year.
AND bring a suit/formal wear! GW puts on a ton of events that you need to dress up for.
