Dorm Life at Catholic Colleges

I went to a large state flagship and lived in an all girls dorm after living in a large coed dorm for one semester. I loved the single sex dorm; I didn’t mind the restrictions on males being on the floor, much less did I mind not having males living down the hall on another floor. I had no trouble making platonic friends of the opposite sex.

This was obviously not a Catholic school, and it was a long time ago, but I really don’t think being in a single sex dorm would be any hardship whatsoever.

My D is in an all girls dorm with liberal visiting hours 2 am. The thing she likes is that no males can be on the floor before 10 am so the girls can feel very comfortable going back and forth to the showers in the morning. She hasn’t found it to be restrictive, there are males and females visiting each other in rooms constantly. She’s mentioned that at least if she’s studying late in a male friend’s room to call it quits at 2 am and get some badly needed sleep. The libraries and common areas are open all night if a student wants to study all night.

I have a freshman son at a Jesuit school. He is in a coed dorm divided by wing. There are also single sex dorms. I think there is a rule about no one of the opposite sex in the rooms after 2am, maybe just in the freshman dorms. He does not seem to think it’s a problem, although I don’t know why he would tell ME!

He did tell me one of the earliest dorm nuisances was a young lady who got inebriated and ran around trying to get into guys rooms, and they wouldn’t let her in. Apparently this happened more than once. There also seems to be plenty of vomiting in the bathrooms, at least last semester.

D is at catholic U with single sex dorms, parietals, etc. Yep, lots of grumbling that first semester. (Hey, you were told up front about this and still chose to attend, so no sympathy.)
I think the girls do appreciate and even prefer it now.

“It’s just that dorm life at, let’s say, Grinnell or Carleton or Beloit would be a different experience from dorm life at Marquette or Notre Dame or St. Thomas.”

I went to Marquette in the late 70’s and I’m here to tell you, the most fun I ever had in my life was in the all-women’s dorm my freshman year. Part of the fun was learning how to occasionally get around the rules… We managed to hoist my boyfriend up by rope into a 2nd story window, for example. Where’s the challenge when guys and girls all live on the same floor? I wouldn’t trade those memories for anything.
