Dorm life at UNC and which dorm to choose?

Hey I think I'm in the right spot. I'm an Australian guy studying at UNC on exchange in Fall 2014. I'm filling out the housing application on where I want to stay. I don't have a specific area where I have to choose from. So my question is which dorm or area should I pick and why? I have 7 to pick for my application. Also what is life like in the dorms as we don't do dorms in Australia, and how will an Aussie exchange student be received on campus? Will they like me or will I struggle to make friends?

I would post on the UNC forum. I also suggest that you post the year you are in and what dorms have UNC offered. The UNC housing site has info about each dorm and location.

In general for undergraduates, you have:

Location:

South campus (farest from main campus and Franklin street, mainly freshman dorms)
Mid-campus (between campus and south campus)
North campus (close to most classes and Franklin street, mostly older (but well maintained) dorms, mostly upper classmen)

Type;

Suite: 1) two double rooms with a shared bath between them) or 2) 4 double rooms with a shared bath. These are mainly found on south and mid-campus.

Corridor type: double rooms with a large common bathroom. Mainly on north campus.

Suites are all male or female. Corridor type are usually all male or female on each floor.

There are other types but these are the more common types.

I will let students answer your other questions.

Hey, I’m also an exchange student from the UK, coming Fall 2014! Do you have any info on the dorms in North Campus - which ones are most popular and lively/throw good events etc. Or do you think apartments would be better for an exchange student? Thanks

Try posting on the UNC board. The UNC housing web site has all the stats for the dorms. I know that Cobb (used as a partial honors dorm) is one of the larger dorms on the north campus.

I would not get a apartment (assuming you mean a on campus one and not Granville (private dorm)). They are on the edge of the campus on the south side. I would think that it would be isolating and harder to meet people.

Maybe a current student will chime in. The thing with dorms is that is all about the mix of students that determine how social it is. That mix can change yearly as student graduate or move to apartments.
