Dorm Life/Welcome Week

1) How does anyone survive in a unit triple? I stayed in one during calSO and there is literally NO ROOM for your stuff. Where do you put everything?

2) On move-in day, if you get to your dorm room first do you just claim the best bed? Or do you wait for your roommates?

3) What's Welcome Week like?

It's usually pre-assigned. In Foothill, the RAs stick nametags on the door that correspond to the beds' positions in the room. So, for the double I was in, the left nametag corresponded to the left bed, and the right nametag corresponded to the right bed. Of course, this isn't enforced, and you can trade with your roommate(s) if they want.

There are mandatory and optional orientations (usually boring) and social activities such as movie nights, RA-led shopping trips, etc. If you're into that stuff, you'd find Welcome Week enjoyable. Also, it would be good to know your floormates before school starts.

I want to know #1 also since I'm going to be in a triple in Unit 1 this year.. :(

Dont bring too much stuff. If you find that you have more room, try to have your parents ship or take more of your stuff. You already know how big they are, so guess how much you can fit. Thats all you really can do.

It's not that bad; I think it's quite a liveable situation. You just have to be economical about things. Limited space means limited space, so you have to use it as effectively as possible. For instance, it's most likely a waste of space (as well as a waste of energy and probably difficult) for all three people to have their own fridge.

For #2, what Student said didn't happen for me and my roommate last semester. We were in Foothill, too. I'd say pick whichever you want if it's not already specified. Whoever gets there first should get to choose.

Oh my goodness, don't EVER go to anything led by RAs or other organized events; you'd just be setting yourself up for disappointment. Make friends, get to know each other, and roam the area to get acquainted with Berkeley people and just the area in general. There has been a lot of threads about Welcome Week and many keep wondering whether or not it's worth going. YES. This is usually followed by a question of what exactly goes on. Well, for one thing, Welcome Week is basically a nominal designation for a free week of school. Go to the Chancellor's Reception just because, but if you do Welcome Week right, then there's no such thing as a planned activity: it will carry a tenor similar to Spring Break- no worries, no problems, no such thing as sleeping before 1am.

Pick whichever bed you want. Basically first come, first serve.

Triples are pretty cramped, especially in the units. Bring less stuff if possible...it should be fine if you economize.

And if you want my honesty, Welcome Week was a total waste of time.

Honestly triple isn't that bad... yes a double is better but triple is fine. Make sure you aren't the 3rd person to arrive on move in day though, or you will take the crappy drawer and share a closet with your roommate!!!

that would mean be the first one to come because 2nd and 3rd will have to share

Is it just me, or are the rooms in Unit 3 slightly larger than Unit 1 and 2? I was in a Unit 3 room for CalSo, and they didn't seem too bad, whereas I toured a Unit 2 room back at Cal Day and it seemed smaller than the room I stayed in.

It's possible, but I doubt it. Can you find anything information on the housing website?

Even if Unit 3 is slightly bigger... I wouldn't live there because unit 1 and 2 were renovated and slightly more appealing.

I noticed that the triple in Unit 3 I stayed in during CalSO seemed pretty big. I was in the Spens-Black building.

On the housing website (<a href="http://www.housing.berkeley.edu/livingatcal/unit3.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.housing.berkeley.edu/livingatcal/unit3.html</a>) I notice that "Spens-Black is designated as the Transfer/Upper Division Hall (TUD, see below)." Is this maybe why the rooms seemed bigger?

probably cuz during CalSO, there was nothing in the rooms and during CalDay, you were looking at rooms occupied by students with things lying around.

^ Very likely.

I stayed in Priestly Hall, and I noticed the same phenomenon.

So is Welcome Week a truly a waste of time? Maybe I should just come during middle of the week?

It's not a TOTAL waste. It's a good chance to stock up on tons of free stuff by going to calapalooza and caltopia.

I'm really curious, what DO they give out? People here keep saying "free stuff" but what are they really? Pens, pencils, erasers, binder papers? If it is, then it really is a waste of time.
