living in parkside right now. Parkside I would say is pretty nice (new dining hall for us next semester as well). Hillside area has alot more people so it may feel crowded in a sense. To me parkside has a home-y feeling to it which creates a nice community. Ask any questions you have, i can definitely answer all of them and am probably your best resource here.

also: yes there is no given wifi but there are ethernet jacks, so buy a 20$ wireless port and you’re golden. i got mine from monoprice.com

I live in Beachside right now. There is wifi but it’s average at best so that’s not a plus. I honestly hate dorming and wish it wasn’t required just because it’s difficult for someone like me who gets up at 7 AM for either work or class every morning and doesn’t get any sleep because of people in my hall.
The best thing about Beachside is the room/bathroom situation. We share a sink with our roommate and a toilet and shower with the 2 girls next door. Our food is also better here as well.

How is it sharing a bathroom and shower with the other people?i have a friend who went to Azusa and she said it was horrid. And is it tough to get around on the csulb shuttle? Since its so far from the classrooms…

Bathrooms really are no problem. In these two semesters I would say I have maybe only had to wait once for the shower and never waited to use the restroom. As for the shuttles I cant speak much since I live on campus rather than the PCH site, but there are always campus shuttles everywhere and it seems like from what i heard, very well run. Also: I have to disagree on beachside having better food. Its the same, I go there once every so often and I would have to say its the atmosphere that may make it “seem” to taste better. Like I said before, Parkside is getting remodeled this summer so it will have a similar setup to beachside… except newer!

We toured the Parkside and Hillside dorms last week. They look like your typical dorms. The guide said that’s where freshmen are encouraged to live. There were just 2 ‘guy’ floors and, it looked like 5 for the girls. I know the campus is about 60% female but, if freshmen are ‘required’ to live on campus, where do the other 1000 or so guys live?

@lakerfan According to what I have heard, yes it should be ready by the fall. Im hearing that they are going to release the plans after spring break although much of the details were told at a dining hall meeting. It sounds like its going to be really awesome!

@NCalRent The way the parkside and hillside dorms work is that we have suites, within these suites are two sides with either 3 or 4 rooms on each side. That i would consider 1 set of a suite. Then, in a building you have room for 4 suites on a floor with two male, two female. Not sure where you saw the guy floors but at least in parkside, this is the way it works. There should be an equal number of guys vs. girls in most dorms.

What it could be is that some buildings might have some more females suites to compensate for the difference.

@Ehhreeull I dont think there is anything wrong with I-house, it looks nice from what I have seen.

If the toilets and showers are separate I don’t see there being any problem with the restrooms. I stayed at a hostel once where the showers and toilets where in the same room and there were only two. Not fun - especially if you’ve gotta go and someones taking a 15 minute shower.

Has there ever been a problem where like somebody steals our clothes that hang on the outside while you shower? That’s the one thing I fear. So like do you get dressed in the shower or do you go bak to your room in a towel or something? An so are the showers coed?

So here are the shower/Bathroom situation. I can only speak for Los Alamitos, Los Cerritos, Beachside, and Parkside. Not sure of the Residence commons bathroom setup.

At Parkside: one room, two showers, two toilets, and three sinks. They are NOT coed and you share that with your suite which is a total of 7 rooms, or 14 people. To be honest, it really does not feel like that many people sharing the bathrooms. Not once have i had to wait for a shower or to use the restrooms, needless to say you wont have a problem.

Cerritos/Alamitios: Similar setup as parkside except larger, you share the bathrooms with all the males or females on your floor. I would assume there is no issue with having to wait.

Beachside: Two rooms are connected (4 people total) with one toilet and shower in the middle. it is a single room so i assume you have to wait if someone else is inside. However i have heard no one having a difficult time with those either. Also, one sink inside your room.

So for these the choice is down to privacy. If you want less people inside the bathrooms when youre inside, i would go for beachside or parkside. they have the best ratio in that regard. If youre okay with lots of people in the bathrooms while youre in there ars well, that would be los alamitos/cerritos.

also lakerfan: thats never a problem. no one will steal your clothes. What i do is use a robe and a towel and carry my shower stuff in a little tote. That way im not trying to change in the small shower while still kind of wet from the moisture in the air. Just walk back with your robe on, and turn the other way from your roommate with the robe on to get dressed.

do you find that people on the floor try to get to know each other and hang out? Or is it really just a place to sleep. I know that RA’s put on events and little get togethers, but do people actually like to go to them?

Everyone likes to hang out. I find its a very social environment due to the small size of the buildings themselves. And lots of people go to the events they put on. I havent done it myself since im there really there for sign-ups but i sometimes see long lines for events at the dining halls.

Are you allowed to be out of the room at any time? Like for example if one roommate is sleeping and its like 1am but you still have work to do, can you do it in one of the lounge settings? or is everything closed?

you have free range to do whatever the hell you want in terms of leaving the room. Every residence hall has a common area and you can be there at all hours of the day. after a certain time though, it becomes quiet hours so you cant be loud or anything. For example, if you and your friends decided that you want to watch a movie or have a video game marathon at 3am in the common room, as long as its not too loud you can. So at 1am you can definitely go down and study.

So I put International House as my first choice ^^ Because @EliteToast recommended it, I put Parkside as my second. However, my friend said it was far from the classes.

Anyways, I’m excited to go go CSULB. Question: Does CSULB frequently run out of dorm space?? >__<

Parkside isnt necessarily that much further from your class. if anything it would add maybe 2-3 minutes walking to class. I enjoy parkside since it seems less crowded than hillside, however some may like that environment.

Typically, they dont fill up 100%, i think this year though they only had a few spare beds over the whole housing system.
