What are the best dorms at UMD? Which have the nicest facilities, best location, relatively good social life, etc? Thanks!
@jhas623 - Prince Frederick is probably the best. It’s the newest. Oakland is a close second. However. Freshman do not get to pick the dorm they want. Dorms are assigned based on Living Learning Communities (LLCs). or are assigned randomly.
The dorms with the best facilities are Prince Frederick Hall and Oakland Hall. They are the most recently built dorms and are had for freshmen to get into. For a freshman to get into PFH, they’d pretty much need to be in either the ACES or DCC program (living and learning programs within the Honors College). Almost all the typical “freshmen” dorms on North Campus have the same facilities and good social life. (I have friends in Denton and Easton that think those dorms are the best, though I don’t think there’s much of a difference.)
Depending on what your major is, some dorms have a better location than others, since they may be closer to the building where you will have most of your classes. For example, I live in PFH and am a computer science major. The CS building is all the way across campus from me, so my dorm isn’t in the best location, but my dorm IS right across from the South Campus Diner and McKeldin Library and has amazing facilities, so the location isn’t that big of a deal to me.
Is it true you have to FULLY move out/empty your dorm over xmas break at UMD? I am really hoping that is not true.
You do NOT have to fully move out, but you do have to empty the mini-fridg, if you have one and you need to take whatever you’ll need for the month long winter break. The basic message is that you will not have access to the dorm room over winter break
Yeah, what SoofDad said. Unless you’re planning to switch rooms during the spring semester (which isn’t common), you do NOT have to completely move out during winter break. All that happens during winter break is that your swipe ID to get into your building is disabled.
