Would anyone recommend a dorm at Chicago? I requested Snell, Broadview, and Judson Burton. My main consideration was the availability of singles and distance to class (does the latter matter that much in the winter?), but I don't know what the culture of each house is...in restropect that may matter more. Can anyone elaborate?
Also I'd like to get an idea on what the math assessment test entails.
Also I hear Chicago emphasize theory over practice in the "real world." In your experience how often do you gain insight on application in your education?

Snell has a great location- couldn't get any better. It was nice when I was there. There were lots of social activities with Hitchcock. Nearly all of the rooms were singles, but the first years and new people got tiny ones. Burton-Judson is beautiful and Gothic, but the location is not very good. It's across the Midway from everything else- a scary walk at night and a longish walk to class. I've heard good things about it, but the location just doesn't seem to be practical.

I chose burton judson; the location doesnt seem bad to me at all. I like snell, but Judson has an underground passage and has awesome architecture. Snell is incredibly unlikely to be your dorm if you're a freshman, so it doesnt really matter that it is the best location-wise. And I hear the social atmosphere at b-j is pretty sweet

If you don't get in as a freshman, chances are you will never get to live there. However, since UChicago is first come, first serve in terms of housing, Snell usually fills with EA apps.

The social atmosphere of BJ sucks. Not as bad as Snell or Broadview, but nothing fun.

I know Snell is for EA folk, which I am, and I sent my request for it in on the same day I was admitted...but are there loads of others who do this? Or who have pressing need for a single in Snell more than I do (no medical issues on my part, etc.)? How are my chances realistically?

Your chances are excellent. Basiclly, if you apply EA, you get your first choice with almost no exceptions.

Good to hear! Thanks : )
